Six Months Ago...

Coming home early was my surprise to Martha. I was going to let her know she didn't have to pick Paige up after work and that she could come straight home to relax. Though when I saw her car in the driveway it made me question if I had missed a message from her. I looked at my phone scrolling through any missed calls or text messages that might have come through and found nothing. The light to the living was on letting me know she was indeed home.

"Martha." I called out as I entered, dropping my briefcase and jacket. I was in the middle of taking my shoes off when I looked up and saw the living room was an ever living mess. I noticed all of it was my clothes and then my eye found my wife hunched over with something in her hand.

Being exhausted from work was one thing, but this was different. The color was drained from her face, her hair was ruffled like she had been combing her fingers through it for hours. Most of all the thing that scared me the most was when she registered my presence and turned her eyes to me. They looked so broken... any light I was used to seeing was... dead.

"What is this?" Her voice was barely a whisper. I wouldn't have heard her if it wasn't so deadly silent in here. I had no idea what she was talking about and I saw her face morph into frustration as she held up the item in question. "Jonathan... what is this?" She asked again, her voice holding more conviction.

I was stunned with my feet rooted into place. What could I say? Admit what I've been hiding, confirm her suspicions? I'm not sure how long I thought this was going to go on for. Though the last thing I thought was that this was what I was going to be walking into today.

Isn't this what you wanted... Was it?

"It's not what it looks like." Really? That's what you came up with?

"Please don't lie to me." The strain in her voice told me she knew I was. It told me she was at her wits end with this. "I feel like I'm going crazy."

She stood up slowly making her way toward me, not saying a word. When she stood in front of me she lifted her hand in front of both of our faces with the fabric dangling between us. She slowly laid it on my shoulder and walked past me towards the door. I turned catching the fabric, "Where are you going?"

She didn't answer, she opened the door widening it, "Get out."

"Martha."

"Get. Out." I rushed up to her wanting to hold her. She immediately retreated and and slammed the door, "I said GET OUT!!!"

"Martha I love you." She shook her head, I could see she didn't want to hear my words but I didn't know what else to do. A wave of panic was taking over, it can't end like this... not like this.
