CHAPTER 57 : CONVERSATION
-
The moment you entered your classroom, you cursed yourself.
‘Well shit.’ You mentally uttered to yourself, already placing your bag on your chair. You have forgotten that Ian is the resident early bird, no one gets to school earlier than him. Well he had his moments but that's besides the point here.
There he sat with his usual teasing look. For someone who just had been greeted by the sight of you - grumbling to yourself early in the morning, he seems happy. Ecstatic even.
Which is odd but you know it's a sign of empending doom, hence your cursing earlier.
“Morning restroom girl.” Was his first word and you glared at him, sitting on your chair not so peacefully. You didn't ignore him of course, he isn't an Alderich, therefore you don't feel the need to ignore him again.
“Morning too Bonabitch.” You responded back which earned you a chuckle from him. Banters like these are normal for the both of you.
“Heard Alex and Christina fought yesterday.” He said as you were browsing your notebook for an upcoming test.
Your fingers paused over your notebook, eyes flicking up to meet Ian's gaze. His grin was as infuriatingly smug as ever, his crimson eyes practically glowing with mischief. Of course, he would know. News like that traveled fast, especially if it involved people like Christina, the school princess.
"Did you also hear that I was stuck in the middle of it?" you asked dryly, flipping your notebook to random pages, you already lost motivation to read. You weren't going to give him the satisfaction of seeing you flustered.
"Oh, I did," he said, leaning back in his chair with a lazy grin. "Front-row seats to the ‘Drama of the Year’ huh? Must’ve been fun."
"Yeah, a real blast," you muttered, resting your chin on your hand. "Nothing like being treated like a tug-of-war rope to make you feel loved."
Ian's eyes narrowed with something that looked like... concern or was it happiness? His poorly hidden grin told you so. No, that couldn’t be it. Not from him but you wouldn't put it past him. He tilted his head, studying you like you were a puzzle with a missing piece.
"Guess that’s why you’re hanging out with Alex now," he said, his voice slower, more thoughtful but you didn't miss the bite in his voice at the mention of your new friend. "Didn’t think you'd ever pick him over Christina."
You shot him a look, already tired of this topic. If it were the normal poke fun between you then it would've been more welcome, talking about your second fall out with your friend is not fun.
"I didn’t pick anyone, Ian. I picked me. I just needed space, that’s all."
He raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed with your reasoning. "Space, huh? And Alex just happens to be the guy offering it?"
Ian is currently cursing himself for not being the one who offered it.
"Yes, because apparently, the universe loves irony," you shot back. "Look, I’m not in the mood for this, okay? If you’re here to poke fun, get in line behind my existential crisis."
Ian barked out a laugh, leaning forward on his desk, his grin returning in full force. “Relax, restroom girl. I’m just messing with you. Besides, you’re right. You do deserve space.”
You blinked, stunned into silence. Did Ian just agree with you?
Noticing your confusion, he gave a small shrug, eyes flickering toward the window. "Don’t look so shocked. Even I know when to back off. Sometimes you just gotta let people breathe."
He glanced back at you, eyes sharp but not unkind but you saw something quite you can't put your finger on. "But if you think Christina’s letting this go, you’re dead wrong."
"Yeah, I know," you muttered, fingers tapping anxiously on your notebook. The image of Christina’s hurt expression from yesterday lingered in your mind, gnawing at you. You hated that look. It made you feel like the bad guy. She always did make you feel like the bad guy but you have to stop yourself once again.
Ian leaned closer, his voice low like he was sharing a secret. "Just a heads-up, people like her? They don’t like losing. Especially not to guys like Alex.” His grin turned wicked.
“So you might wanna brace yourself for Round Two.”
"Thanks, Ian," you muttered sarcastically, glaring at him. "Really helpful advice. You should write a self-help book."
He laughed, loud and carefree, as if he hadn’t just predicted your inevitable doom. "If I did, I’d dedicate the first chapter to you, restroom girl.”
You rolled your eyes, but you couldn't help the small smile tugging at your lips. Annoying as he was, Ian wasn’t always wrong. And maybe, just maybe, that’s what worried you most.

Heads up? Ian is a hypocrite. And wow, look who updated twice! It's short tho
