丨-Chapter Fifty  Homeland Inbound-

- ɪ-ɪꜱʟᴀɴᴅ ᴇᴘɪʟᴏɢᴜᴇ -

At first, you just stared into the flickering specks of tiny stars forming the vague silhouette of a person within the black void. You weren't afraid. Just... tired. Worn thin at the seams by the time-wasting pandemonium that was the last two days. Still, you addressed it with quiet resignation. "You've been quiet."

It gave a pause punctuated by a hum, "𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧'𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞"

Your eyes narrowed, "You're not a conscience."

"𝐍𝐨, 𝐈'𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐭."

The voice didn't rise or fall enough to pinpoint an emotion on a spectrum. It didn't mock or push. It was acting like a presence that spoke as plainly as a fact in a textbook, "Why are you acting so... mellow?" You stated quietly.

"𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐝."

Your arms crossed loosely across your chest. It was being too lenient to bite back, and all you could do was float weightless in this internal black sea. You sighed and looked around, but there was nothing. Just an inky abyss that you floated in, apart from the small set of eyes that floated with a glimmer. "What do you mean... I haven't needed you?"

There was a vibration, like it hummed, "𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧."

"Not by choice," you answered flatly, some pretense of bite came back with vengeance, despite only being a defensive glare.

"𝐌𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬".

Your lip twitched down at the corner, the closest thing to a frown, "I'm not lonely." You said it as if you wanted everyone else to believe it.

The figure didn't answer. It didn't have to. Silence was answer enough. But just before the weight of sleep dragged your consciousness away, it chuckled. It was a soft, echoing sound that rippled like a drop in a still lake. "𝐈𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐮𝐩... 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐨𝐧'𝐭."

--3RD Person POV--

Not right now. You didn't want to face it. I don't want to. Reality could wait; you didn't need this.

Your awakening was welcomed by the crisp, salt-bitten breeze of the open sea that had howled outside the hull. The still warmth that stuck faintly to the cotton sheets beneath your back did little to ease you into absoluteness.
