Six months later

Zandra fetches the mail from the ornate, nickel-plated box bolted to the brick outside Sneak Peek. Gene spared no expense in fixing up her business, no matter how ludicrous.

"Beautiful spring we're having," the postal worker says as Zandra looks up from the mail.

"Real nice. I might close up early and take a walk. Pity to waste a day like this one," Zandra says. Walking comes much easier since the ankle surgery. She actually enjoys it now.

Zandra brings the mail inside after waving to a passing car. One of her partners from the bookstore. They help each other sell niche occult books, most of them self-published by the fringes of the fringe. Zandra handles the marketing, using her Sneak Peek clients as customers. The bookstore fulfills the sale and sends Zandra a cut.

The mail contains the usual bills and advertisements, but one envelope sticks out. It's a little too plain, and the return address is the same as Sneak Peek.

Zandra takes a seat at her commanding oak table and digs out the lawnmower knife from one of the drawers. Herman offered to spruce the rough design up, but Zandra prefers its junkyard aesthetic. She slips the tip of the blade under the envelope's flap and cuts free the contents.

Out falls a photo of Zandra getting the mail. It looks to be recent, because Sneak Peek sports its new look in the background. Zandra flips the photo over. In typewritten block letters are the words, "IM COMING FOR YOU FRAUD."

Gene? No, it's too soon for him. He's too particular to not use proper grammar. He wouldn't be so cryptic, either.

A jaded client? Maybe.

Zandra gives the envelope another shake. A second photo flutters to the desk. This one shows someone unfamiliar. It's of a young woman about half the age of Zandra. She's also posed in a candid moment at a mailbox.

Zandra flips the photo over. The same block letters type out, "YOUR DAUGHTER IS PRETTY."

Daughter?

The End
