We sit on the floor in my living room, papers spread out everywhere. I tap my chin with the butt of a pencil. The pink eraser has been chewed off from my nervousness. Christina is lounging on the couch, her eyes narrowed, looking at a map Zeke drew. He rests his head on Shauna's lap. We've been here all day and a majority of the night devising a flawless plan.
"Zeke this makes no sense," Christina says and throws the map down in frustration. After describing the building to Zeke and showing it to him from a distance, he told us that he would be able to more or less draw the interior.
"Well I'm so-rry," Zeke says irritably. Shauna strokes the top of his head lovingly, calming him down.
"We're all tired. I think we should take a break," I say. Christina doesn't hesitate. She jumps up and grabs her bag. She slings it over her shoulder and makes her way out of the apartment with a measly 'Goodbye, see you later'.
"Four are you really serious about this?" Shauna asks and I nod.
"Why is everybody doubting me?" I say furiously.
"Dude it's not that we doubt you we just think that it's a bad idea. Your mother could just have a grumpy boyfriend? So what! How do you actually know that something is wrong?" Zeke says and sighs. I can see he's getting irritated at me.
"I just do!" I stand up. I can feel myself shaking. I'm not necessarily angry with Zeke, I'm more angry with my mother and the fact that I know something is wrong I just don't know what. I check the time on my wrist watch. I was going to be late for my lecture. Again.
"I need to get going," I mumble. "You two can stay here if you want." Shauna nods and yawns. I don't take anything besides my spare house keys just in case Zeke locks me out. It's happened before.
The morning air nips at my skin and I pull my hoodie over my head. I jog through the park towards the university. The girls on their bicycles pass me and the girl that leant me her bike smiles at me. Just a normal day. I push on forwards, giving the bike girl a small nod. Her cheeks start to flame bright red.
Students are crowded around the Science building. I recognise them to be some of the people who come to my usual lectures. They are all holding books and I feel unprepared. This lecturer already doesn't like me.
"Hi stranger." I turn around at the familiar voice and smile as Libby wraps her arms around me in a hug.
"You haven't answered any of my calls," she says and releases me. She holds her books to her chest and I notice the tattoo on her wrist again. I've never asked her about it.
"I've been busy," I say and scratch the back of my head. I'm not sure if I want to tell Libby about what we've been doing. I think of Zeke and Shauna having doubt about this... Maybe I should tell her. She'll trust me.
"Too busy to call your girlfriend?" She questions and raises her eyebrow. I see people flooding into the building. The lecture is about to start.
"Come over later alright? I'll explain everything," I blurt out. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing that I told her. I'm trying to convince myself that it's a good thing. Something flickers behind Libby's eyes and I can't tell if it's happiness or curiosity. Maybe both. I wouldn't too be happy if she was hiding things from me. She probably just wants to be included. A smile breaks out onto her lips. Such a pretty smile... A pang shoots through my head as I remember a very similar smile that once belonged to Tris. I shouldn't say that a dead girl's smile is more beautiful than my girlfriends. That wouldn't be right.
"I'll come around two, okay? Oh and you better take some of this," Libby says and hands me a pen and a pad of paper. I smile in acknowledgement and kiss her on the cheek before running to the hall.
