---

You were sat on the couch of your living room, cup of hot tea in your hand, a book held open with the other. You'd been waiting for your husband of many years to come home from his job, the long hours you'd have to see him gone finally paying off when he'd arrive home with a soft smile and sleepy eyes.

Today was different, however, the look on your face dropping when Shawn came home with slurred words and bloodshot eyes. He stumbled through the back door and through the kitchen slowly, keys clattering on the counters, jacket thrown messily on the tile of the hallway, and although no words had elicited from his turned down lips, you'd sensed something was wrong the moment he stepped foot into the house.

Setting your book down gently, he stared at you with pained eyes, failing to take any move closer to you. He stay at the edge of the couch, uneven breaths leaving his puffy lips, hair disheveled and left as a tangled mess on top of his head.

You'd taken a moment to study his aged features. His eyes screamed with exhaustion, nearly unnoticeable wrinkles forming on the edges of his eyes and mouth. His hair used to be thick, full of body, but it had thinned over the years and years of stress.

Only then had you realized how drained he looked, how weakened he'd appeared, and after all twenty years you've spent with him, he looked out of love. He stared at you with cold eyes, the lust-filled gaze you were so used to disappearing as seconds passed.

"Shawn?" you mumbled, more a question than a statement as you rose to your feet. He shook his head expeditiously, swiftly swiping off the gold wedding band off his finger and flinging it at your chest. It fell to the floor with a loud clatter as you eyed him with shock.

Falling onto the couch, Shawn placed his head between his knees and ran his fingers through his hair, pulling at the roots in attempt to relieve some tension.

"We're over."

The words left his lips as if he'd been meaning to say it for years. It seemed so easy for him, the three syllables gliding off his tongue with ease. He didn't dare make eye contact with you, keeping his eyes fixed on the rapid up and down movement of his shoe.

"W-What do you mean?" you stutter, stepping near him, tears beginning to blur your vision, "Shawn, look at me! What's that supposed to mean?"

The second his eyes met yours, you cracked. Tears left your eyes and trailed down your cheeks as he stood up once again, "Divorce papers are going to be sent to you tomorrow, Y/N. I don't want to be with you anymore."

You were so confused, and this was all so sudden. You kept wracking for answers in your brain, but not a single idea was able to come up. Shawn was the only one for you, you the only one for him, and that's how it had always been, since the moment you two had met. Through all the words clouding your mind, only one left your lips.

"Why?"

Shawn gazed blankly at you as he stood back up, the words he mumbled in your ear sending shivers of pain down your spine, "I don't love you anymore."

Shaking your head in denial, you bit down on a spiteful chuckle, "That's not how it works, Shawn, you don't just fall out of love."

"But I did, Y/N!" he shouted, throwing his hands in the air, "I did."

Shawn began to leave the room in large strides when he received nothing but a pained look from your eyes. He was fuming with anger as you caught him by the wrist, putting his hurried actions to a halt.

"Shawn, stay with me, just for tonight. You can leave tomorrow, but please," you begged with a hushed tone, body shaking with misery.

Clenching his jaw, he tilted his head to the side, "Why should I?

"Because I still love you, Shawn. And I know that may not mean a whole lot to you right now, but the past fifteen years had to have been for something."

With a softened glance he nodded slowly, taking your smaller hands in his and leading you to the bedroom.

With the sheets pulled to your shoulders and the familiar feeling of Shawn's chest pressed to yours, it felt like nothing had changed. The way he held you like he always did before and the way he peppered kisses down your neck, as almost a way to remember him, wasn't something someone out of love would have done. But you couldn't help but think he was acting, pretending like he still loved me, because he knew it was the only way I could move on.
