Chapter Eight

"Thanks for meeting me here." I smiled, as Liam walked up.

"No problem," he responded, shooting me a smile.

I asked Liam to meet me between the buses, because I feel like we should take a break. Don't get me wrong, our relationship has been fine, and going really well. But we have too much on our plates, from the dread doctors, to dealing with Theo. I just don't think we have as much time for each other as we used to.

"So, what do you need?" he asked.

"I just wanted to say that-" I started,

It felt like I was talking, but no words were coming out. We need a break. We're dealing with so much, all of us are. Malia, Scott, even Stiles is. But for some reason, I just couldn't do it. I just couldn't spit out the words,

"I'm sorry," Liam finally said.

"What?"

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry for not paying as much attention to you as I should be. I'm sorry that I've been a terrible boyfriend." he finished.

"Liam, you're not a terrible boyfriend." I chuckled, before looking down.

"Yes, Liz. I-" he stuttered. "I am. I haven't been paying much attention to you."

"Liam, we're all dealing with so much. We deal with so many things that no ordinary teenagers would even imagine dealing with." I begin, "And because we have to worry about the dread doctors, and chimeras, and Theo Raeken, and just-" I sigh,

"What I'm trying to say, is..." I paused, "I think we need a break. We can't possibly face all of these creatures, and people, if we're also trying to keep our relationship working."

"What?" Liam's voice fell.

"Liam," I tried taking a step towards him, but he backed up. "I'm sorry..."

Liam opened his mouth to say something, but shook his head instead. "You're right. It's horrible to say, but you're right." he chuckled.

"How are we supposed to survive, if we're focusing on a relationship." he agreed. "It's sad to think about, though. We can't live normal teenage lives because we have to try not to get killed.."

"Tell me about it. That's all I think about." I stare back at him with sad eyes, "We're too young to be dealing with this kind of stuff, Liam. We shouldn't be worried about dying. We should be worried about tests, and school dances, and lacrosse practice-" I let out a laugh in disbelief.

He pulled me in for a hug, holding my head in his shoulder. "I know, Liz."

We broke apart, and gave each other sad smiles as tears built up in my eyes. "I'm sorry, Liam."

"Hey, you don't need to apologize. It's for the best, really." he gave my hand a reassuring squeeze. "When this whole thing's over and the dread doctors are gone, we'll pick right back up again, okay?"

I gave him a nod as he wiped a tear from my face, before kissing my cheek. "I'll see you later, Shields."

"Later Dunbar." I chuckled, as he walked away. My laughter soon faded into crying, and I leaned against the school bus, my back pressed up against it as I slid down the side of the bus.
