Chapter Fourty

A few hours later, we all stood in the rain beside Father Kieran, waiting for him to finish blessing Esther's body for the ritual.

I had wanted to stay back at the abattoir, simply because I wasn't a blood relation and would have no use in the ceremony to consecrate Esther, but Elijah asked me to come anyway. They all said that my blood would help the process, even though I didn't have any of Esther's blood line. They explained it like it would be a little power boost. It would help to speed up the process.

Elijah and I were under one umbrella, while Hayley had her own beside us, and Rebekah and Nik held another one.

"Are you ready to do this?" Kieran asked. We all nodded in reply, and Nik put down his hood as he pulled a knife out from his pocket.

"Always and forever," he smirked at Rebekah, then moved the edge of the blade down his palm so that it was covered in his blood.

Rebekah did the same, then Hayley, then Elijah.

Elijah looked down at me before handing me the knife. I sliced my own palm, feeling it beginning to heal again almost the second that I did.

I held the knife out to Kieran, who took it and then threw it on top of Esther's coffin. "It is done," he said.

We all went to the cemetary, and I could feel Esther's power no longer within her body. Being in New Orleans was so unique for me. I could sense the power that laid in the earth. Sometimes, it was so strong that it felt like electricity was surging in my feet each time I took a step. Her power was beginning to go to Sophie, who was now an elder.

We were ready.

Elijah stood waiting on top of one of the tombs, with Klaus standing on another across from us. Rebekah and Hayley were beside each other on the ground, and Sophie was standing beside the large slab where the three other harvest girls were laid.

We had been waiting for a few minutes when we saw it. A trail of fire was moving throughout the cemetary, and as it got closer, I could see her. Marcel was carrying Davina to the slab. She looked exhausted, and incredibly close to death.

When Marcel set her down, she almost fell back to the ground again, but she stayed standing like the strong young girl she is.

Sophie warmed the knife over the flames, then walked over to Davina. Her expression was stone cold, like she didn't even care that she was about to kill a teenage girl.

"Do you believe in the harvest?" she asked.

Davina nodded, and I could see the fear in her eyes. "I believe."

Sophie didn't hesitate for a second. She moved the knife up to Davina's neck, slicing her throat open. I heard her take one strangled breath before the blood began to pool out of the wound. She sunk backwards, and Marcel caught her.

I watched as the girl who I had tried so hard to protect died so mercilessly. I bit my lip to stop the tears that rushed to my eyes from falling, which didn't work. A single stray one fell down my face, and I turned away from her body, listening to the fire disappear and the rain stop hitting the ground.
