Bernard Was Actually Megamind.

CHAPTER 13

Kayla

My mind drew a complete blank. Evan who? My grandfather's name had been Evan, and I hadn't done anything to him. In fact, he'd died before I was even born.

“Who’s Evan?” I asked, puzzled.

Jake swore under his breath and pulled over to the side. Then he turned to me and glared.

“Why are you acting like you don’t know what I’m talking about?”

“Because I don’t know what you’re talking about, genius.” I said lightly.

“Please, Kayla, not now.” He said seriously.

I didn’t know why he was looking so serious and pissed. It’s not like the reason he had hated me was that bad. I had thought it must have been something like me not going on a date with one of his buddies or something.

Not like I’m bragging or anything, but almost all of the jocks tended to ask me out. Mostly because I worked with them a lot, like taking interviews and photos for the magazine. I think that when you have a lot of contact with a person, you tend to start liking them. I had dated only a few of them. Some of the jocks I’d rejected had really big ego issues. Maybe Jake was friends with some of them.

Somehow this explanation didn’t make a lot of sense.

“So, you’re not going to say anything?” Jake asked me.

“I swear Jake, I don’t know what you're talking about!”

Jake’s eyes widened like he’d just realised something. He looked like he was mentally face-palming himself.

“What was your sister’s ex-fiancé’s’ name?”

Now it was my turn to widen my eyes. He asked me the name of the one person I never ever wanted to think about.

“Hunter Vander. Why?” Even his name left a bad taste in my mouth.

“He’s Brody’s brother.”

It took a moment for the meaning of his words to sink in.

“He’s your uncle As in the rock-star Hunter?”

How many disgusting uncles did he have?

“His real name is Evan Andrews. I guess I thought you must have known his real name.”

“I thought so too.”

Bastard. He hadn’t even told my sister his real name! I calmed myself down before I broke something.

“Look,” I said, “I understand that you might feel awkward because of it, but that’s no reason to hate me. No offence, but Hun—Evan deserved what he got. I’m glad my sister had the sense to leave him because he was completely ruining her.”

“And you decided this? That’s why you helped her to run away?”

I paled. How did he know that? Jake noticed my paleness, and he got even angrier. This made me angry.

“Yes.” I said fiercely. I helped my sister run away from a scheming sick bastard. So sue me.

“Don’t you have any feelings? Do you realise what you did to my uncle? He loved her!”

I scoffed. “Yeah, right.”

“Get out of my car.”

That I was shocked is an understatement. This was downright mean. My shock must have shown on my face, because Jake let out a bitter laugh, and said, “What? Did you think you were so pretty that I’d be seduced?”
