“I’m nervous,” I sighed as Aiden and I waited in the airport. My great aunt was supposed to be getting here soon.

He gave me a small smile and draped his arm over my shoulders, pulling me against him. I would be lying if I said I didn’t love that. “Why? She’s your family.”

“Yeah, but I’ve never met her. I didn’t even know I was adopted until two days ago.” I retorted, looking around at all the people. How would I even recognize my aunt? All I knew was that her name was Kate.

Aiden’s smile turned reassuring. “I know; that must be a lot to take in. But I’m positive she’ll love you and you’ll learn everything she has to teach you so we can finally get rid of Milo.”

“Yeah…” I muttered, thinking of my impossible task. The Elders had said that I could bring Milo back to them if I couldn’t kill him. But how was I supposed to safely do that? Killing him seemed easier, but could I really do that?

“I’m so sorry about everything,” Aiden suddenly mumbled. I peered up at him, surprised by his apology that had come out of nowhere.

I raised my eyebrows at him. “What?”

“If I’d left you alone you wouldn’t have been in this position. I should have waited until after I’d killed Milo to inform you of werewolves and mates and such.” His voice was quiet so the others in the airport wouldn’t hear, but I still caught the tone of regret.

I shook my head. “It’s worth it.” He started to protest, but didn’t have the chance as someone joined us. The girl that stepped in front of us couldn’t be older than twenty-five.

“Are you Samara?” She asked me hesitantly. Her hair fell in dark waves and her eyes were a bright blue; she seemed powerful although not as much so as the Elders.

“Yeah- you’re Kate?” I asked, shocked. I’d expected her to be much older.

She nodded, smiling kindly. “Yeah; our family was pretty complex…” She managed a small laugh as her eyes fell on Aiden. “And you’re her mate.” It wasn’t a question; it was a statement.

“Yes, I’m Aiden. It’s nice to meet someone from Samara’s family,” he greeted her politely, holding out his hand. She shook it and turned back to me.

“So, are we going to your house or am I going to train you in the airport?” She asked sarcastically. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like her.

Aiden cleared his throat, his arm tightening around me. “We should get your bags first, shouldn’t we?”

“Of course,” she stated and headed towards the luggage carousel, disappearing into the crowds of people. I pursed my lips and leaned my head on Aiden’s shoulder.

He glanced down at me. “She seems… interesting.”

“No kidding,” I agreed dryly. She seems a bit full of herself. Then again, I’d just met her; it wasn’t fair for me to judge her so quickly…

An hour later we were back at my house and Kate was getting on my last nerve. She wasn’t being outright rude, but she had a smugness about her that bothered me. And I would have to get used to it or die.

“Okay, how much about mages?” Kate asked me. We were sitting in my living room on opposite couches. Aiden sat next to me, holding my hand for moral support.
