Chapter Sixty-Six

I heard them, and turned to Hayley, who was still having a mini freak attack in the living room. "They're here," I said.

I looked to the doorway of the living room to see Jackson walking in, struggling a little and cringing in pain once in awhile. "I got it," he said to Elijah. Hayley helped Jackson inside, and I went straight to Elijah.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. He seemed stunned for a moment, then hugged me to him.

I knew that he was immortal, and I knew that he couldn't die, but that didn't mean I was going to stop worrying about his well being. I suppose that I felt the same way about him that he did with me.

We both pulled away, and I sent him a relieved smile, still keeping my hands on his shoulders.. "I'm glad that you're alright."

"I'm fine too," I heard Klaus say as he walked into the room. "Thanks for asking," he smirked a little.

"What about the stones?" Hayley asked.

"Scattered across the bed of the Mississippi, I imagine," Elijah replied, sighing softly.

"Marcel is no fool," Klaus said, pouring himself a drink. "He knows an empowered werewolf army would mean the end of vampires in New Orleans. The explosion is his way of saying he means to prevent that, for all the good it'll do him," he smirked.

"Well, it did him pretty damn well, didn't it?" Hayley said.

"This is my fault, I will find a way to fix it," Jackson said, grunting a little.

"No, Jack. You're hurt, and no one's blaming you," Hayley said to him.

"I'm blaming you," Klaus said.

"Oh, shut up Nik!" I growled. "It isn't his fault and you know it."

Klaus narrowed his eyes at me, then continued. "Those stones will be hard to replace. Fortunately, I always have a backup plan."

He walked out of the living room, and Elijah, Hayley and I all went after him.

"You can't seriously mean her, she's a gangster!" Hayley made her disagreement known when she saw Francesca Correa walking into the abattoir with a few men in suits following behind her.

"I see her more as a means to preparing rare items at short notice," Klaus replied, walking down the stairs. "Greetings, Miss Correa. I see you brought company."

"These are my brothers," she said, gesturing to the men behind her. "I always include them in delicate business matters. Fellas, meet Mr. Mikaelson."

"Please, call me Klaus. All of my friends do," Klaus smiled.

"I don't know if I'd call us friends," Francesca replied, turning to one of her brothers. He held up a briefcase, and she opened it. "But if you and Marcel are planning to have a little throwdown, I prefer my family to be on the same side as the inevitable victor," she pulled out a bag, and I immediately knew it was some of the stones. Only a few, though. But it was enough for tonight.

"Then, you have what I asked for?" Klaus said.

She nodded. "Not enough for an army at such short notice, but it's a start," she said, handing the bag to Klaus.

"Strange," Elijah said, seeming slightly angered by Klaus' failure to tell him what he had been planning. "I wasn't aware that she was familiar with our plan."

"My price for doing business is full disclosure," Francesca said. "Your brother complied."

"And what does the human faction expect to benefit from all of this?" he asked.

"I only want to solidify our allegiance to the ruling class," she replied. "It's good for business."

"If only everyone shared your capacity for reason," Klaus said.

"Sadly, they don't. Marcel is being especially vindictive. I'm worried he might come after me or my family just for meeting with you. It might be in our best interests if we combine our efforts," Francesca said.

"So be it," Klaus said. "The more bodies we have to defend the compound, the better. Let's get started, shall we?"

I glanced over at Elijah before I walked to the kitchen, not feeling especially eager to stay around the Correa's. I could tolerate her, but she still made me... Nervous. I couldn't explain it. It was like she was hiding something. But even so, she was a human. We could kill her and her family if it came to that.

"Are you feeling alright?" I heard Elijah ask, and I turned to see that he was standing right beside me. "Your heartbeat is erratic right now."

"Yes, I am, I'm just... Nervous. I don't trust her," I said.

"Does she frighten you?" he asked.

I shook my head. "No, no, of course not. I just... I feel like something is missing. Marcel is going to do something, or the witches are going to make a move, or the wolves were lying to us... This just all seems too easy."

"Perhaps you're right," he said, tapping his fingers against the marble counter. "But you might also be wrong. Maybe we're finally getting a bit of good luck."

"Over the years, I've figured out that we all make our own luck," I told him. "We make our own choices. The only thing left to do is hope that it was the right one."

We all stood in the dining room, where Genevieve was making the rings. Klaus didn't want me to do it. He said that he needed me in case this all went south. And somehow, I knew that it would. It turns out that I was right, because a few minutes into the spell, Francesca walked in.

"My people say Marcel is on the move, and he's bringing friends," she said, almost seeming like she was frightened.

Perhaps she was just a very talented actress.

"Get Hayley to safety," Klaus ordered, then walked out of the room to go and see what exactly was going on.

"Come with us," I told Hayley, Elijah and I both walking to the doorway.

"No," Hayley said. "Someone needs to watch her," she was talking about Genevieve.

Elijah didn't seem very convinced, and neither was I.

"You should help Klaus," Francesca said. "My brothers and their security detail won't be much against a vampire army. I'll stay with Hayley."

She nodded. "Both of you should go," Hayley walked up to us, swallowing before speaking. "And don't hold back."

I looked at Elijah, who nodded once to me. I turned back to Hayley, and sighed. "We'll deal with this. It won't take long, I promise."

The two of us quickly left, leaving behind a very nervous-looking Francesca and a determined Hayley to deal with Genevieve.
