A few days had passed since your conversation with R.L. Stine, and though you tried to focus on your schoolwork and everyday routine, you couldn't stop thinking about the new friend he had promised to create for you. The mystery of it all filled you with anticipation, and you often caught yourself daydreaming about what—or who—it could be. You had no idea what to expect, but you trusted Stine's words. Whatever he was planning, it was going to be special.
After school, you walked home with Zach and Hannah, the usual banter between the couple making you feel a bit like a third wheel. Zach had really found his place in Madison, especially since meeting Hannah, and while you were happy for him, there was a pang of jealousy. You hadn't found that same comfort yet. The days felt longer, the loneliness heavier.
Once home, you went straight to your room to get some homework done, though your mind was elsewhere. You powered through math problems and English assignments, the hours slipping by until you finally closed your books with a sigh of relief. As you lay on your bed, staring at the ceiling, you thought back to your conversation with Stine. Could it be possible that he was creating something truly amazing? Something just for you? The idea made your heart race.
Just then, your phone buzzed, pulling you from your thoughts. You reached over to grab it, and to your surprise, it was a message from Hannah.
Hannah: Hey Y/n! Come over when you can, my dad has something to show you :)
It seemed innocent enough, but your mind immediately went to Stine's promise. Was it time already? You couldn't help the giddy feeling bubbling up inside you.
Y/n: Be right there! On my way!!
You quickly grabbed your sweater, your pulse quickening as you rushed out of your room. Before heading out the door, you passed Zach, who was lounging on the couch, scrolling through his phone.
"I'm heading over to the Stine's for a bit," you said, trying to keep your voice casual. Zach raised an eyebrow. "Something up?"
"I don't know... Hannah said her dad has something to show me. Probably just something cool from one of his books."
Zach, always the protective older brother, decided to tag along, intrigued but not overly concerned. You both made your way next door, your heart pounding with anticipation. What could Stine have planned?
When you stepped into the Stine house, you noticed how quiet it was. There was no sign of Stine or Hannah, and for a moment, you wondered if you'd gotten your hopes up for nothing. But then, your eyes fell on the living room—and there he was.
Sitting in one of the armchairs, as if he had never been gone, was Slappy.
You froze, your breath catching in your throat. The same sharp suit, the same polished wooden face, the same eerie, knowing grin. He looked just as he had before—the cracks on his nose and chin, his stiff limbs resting by his sides—but there was something about him that seemed... different. You didn't know how to process it. The dummy they had defeated not so long ago was sitting right there in front of you.
