CHAPTER 21: THE DEVIL INSIDE

The Dorm Room

Natalie Saltzman would curse the day she admitted to be a slacker. She could call herself lazy, yes. But she would never allow herself to admit to being a full-on slacker. And that was why, as much as she wanted to, she could not stay and make out with Stefan when she had classes to attend.

When she was finally done with her classes, she decided to go on with her new,  normal routine. It included texting Stefan, trying to reach Elena once again (seeing as she had pretty much been MIA) and hoping Caroline wasn't freaking out like she had been doing so much lately.

"Caroline Forbes, if I find you cleaning when I open this stupid door, I swear, I will snap your cleaning supplies in half," Natalie threatened loudly, even if the blonde could easily hear her with her supernatural hearing.

The brunette counted the next three seconds before opening the door completely, finding her best friend frozen as she had forgotten to put one of those dust-wiping thingies away.

"Well, well, well," Natalie spoke, smirking as Caroline glared holes in her head. But she was one to keep her promises, so she walked towards the only thing she had left out and snapped it in a quick movement.

"I hate you," Caroline grumbled, crossing her arms over her chest with s pout. She only got more annoyed when the only response the brunette sent was an air-kiss.

Their exchange was interrupted by the sharp ring of her phone, which she quickly grabbed from her pocket, finding it to be exactly the second person she was hoping it would be (after her missing sister, of course). And so she answered whilst putting it on speaker, because Caroline was going to listen in anyways, why not let her talk too? "Sup' boy?"

"God, I love you," the voice on the other side breathed, and Natalie could faintly hear Caroline force a gag.

But the other person on the phone happened to be Natalie, so she wasn't going to giggle that quickly when he had totally thrown an oppurtunity right in her face. "No, I am terribly sorry, sir, but I'm not very religious. Good luck calling others with your scriptures, though."

"And now I hate you," Stefan responded on the other line before deciding to actually get to the point of why he called. "I need a favor. You know how Damon was trying to be all noble and broke up with Elena?"

"Of course, there was champagne." Natalie nodded.

He clearly hesitated with saying his next words, mostly because he was certain Caroline was listening. "Yeah... well, I kind of convinced him that he was an idiot."

Natalie had exactly 0.234 seconds to mentally prepare for Caroline's reaction, which was a loud: "You what?"

Stefan was lucky enough to be able to quietly distance himself from the phone when he wanted and then quickly continue. "And now he's in a bit of a mood... and something tells me he's been trying to get a hold of Elena and she hasn't been returning his phone calls. So, I need your help."

"I don't know..." Natalie trailed off, knowing that it was best not to take sides between her twin and her best male friend.

Caroline, however, seemed more able to create a reasoning. "Look, I would love to help; if I thought he was actually good for her, but I don't..."
