Dilation is key.

You'd be lying if you said you hadn't thought about dilation, but honest to god, you didn't think about it taking this long. You assumed that it was just a quick part right before the birth-- three centimeters, four centimeters, five, ect... you thought it would take ten minutes tops, along with contractions.

You were so focused on the delivery process, you didn't even think about all the patience you had to have leading up to it.

Your water had broken approximately four hours ago, and you could see now the small crack of light coming in through the window of your private hospital room. It seemed like ages ago that you fixed yourself a bowl of cereal.

"Shit," you curse again, feeling intense pain all over again. You grab onto something, anything-- the now disgusting sheets, the plastic bars of headboard, Shawn's sweater-- anything.

Every time you got another contraction, you would curse, and then grab something. Shawn seemed to be getting slightly annoyed by your actions, since you were most likely putting him in pain. But he had nothing to complain about when it comes to pain.

You had no idea contractions would hurt this bad. All you were scared about was delivery; that was it.

"I nee-d d-drugs," you stammer, beads of sweat forming on the bridge of your nose.

"No," Shawn says sternly. "You're almost to nine centimeters. Hang in there."

"Hang in there? How would you like to be hanging from a rope in the bathroom? Get me some drugs."

You scream again, feeling icky and unsanitary, afraid to take a peek under the covers at the mess you had made.

Shawn glances at the nurse, who shakes his head quickly. "I know it hurts, Mrs. Mendes, but-- "

"Hey," you speak up, "First of all, you're a murse, so unless you have a uterus that's in the process of opening up ten fucking centimeters and killing you little by little, shut the hell up. And second of all, I'm not a Mendes, I'm a Y/L/N."

"I'm sorry," Shawn apologizes immediately to the male nurse, who seemed pissed. "She's just-- "

"I know. But I'm not giving you any drugs," he says towards you, in a much less kinder tone, "because you didn't sign for any. I'm sorry."

"Am I almost there, at least?" you ask rather impatiently.

The nurse rolls his eyes. "Let me go get the doctor."

He turns to walk away, and you look over at Shawn, who was already looking at you. You could see tears brimming in the corners of his eyes.

"It's so unfair," he speaks up, his voice soft as his hand rests on your thigh, relaxing you. You almost forgot about your pain for a moment.

"What's unfair?" you ask curiously.

"That the person who is hurting you the most can be so beautiful at the same time."

You had never heard him speak so poetically, it's like the lack of sleep had changed something in his brain cells, too. You smile slightly.

"I know," you say. "I mean, even though Junior is making me want to kill myself, I know that I'm going to love him more than anyone in the world, and that makes me beyond happy."

Shawn laughs to himself, and you sneak a glance at him as he looks down at the bed for a moment, rubbing circles with his thumb on the covered inside of your thigh.

"Baby," he whispers, looking up at you finally, tucking a stringy lock of hair behind your ear that had fallen. He didn't seem to care that you looked like a new definition of awful. "Y/N... I wasn't talking about Junior."

His eyes meet yours for a moment, and you were suddenly aware of him again. Like the moment you first saw him, at school, freshman year.

He was practically famous at your school for being a vine star, and you worshipped the ground he walked on. You'd never even heard of him before then, but soon, after going home and watching all of his YouTube videos and compilations, you were hopelessly in love, and you couldn't deny it even now.

But then you two started dating, and then broke up, became friends, then friends with benefits-- then babymommy and babydaddy, roomates, "friends" with history. You didn't know what you felt when you looked at him anymore, if you hated him or of you loved him. But right now, you were looking at him as a human.

And you thought that maybe, he might lean in even closer, and do that little peck on the lips that turned into something much more magical, which you craved daily when you were together.

But before he could do anything, the door to your room opens again.

"Okay, Y/F/N," the doctor's voice cuts into your thoughts. "How's it been going on the contractions?"

You turn to face him, taking in his appearance. He looked like he hadn't slept in days. His tired eyes were almost drowning in the bags beneath them; his beard overgrown and in desperate need of a shave. He had a coffee stain on his coat, but still tried to appear alert.

"Not good," you groan. "They've stopped for now, but I can usually feel them coming on."

"Do you mind if I take a look?" he asks politely, stepping towards the edge of the blanket. You feel uncomfortable while nodding slowly, as you always do every time one of the three people treating you looked under the blanket. It was professional for them, but for you, you got awkward.

"Wow," he states plainly. "You're moving along quickly. I think it might be time to go to the delivery room."

You widen your eyes. "Wait, seriously?"

He nods, looking up at you finally. "Ten centimeters."

You advert your gaze to Shawn, who was close to you again. He smiles anxiously.

"Ready?" he asks, his voice barely audible.

You were about to say yes, but then you realized it might be more appropriate to say no. But maybe that meant that you didn't know-- either way, you just take a deep breath, and you didn't answer.

You didn't answer because Shawn kissed you.

Right in front of the doctor and the murse, he pecked at your lips softly, his smile shaping the kiss. It took you by surprise, but eventually, you kissed him back.

When he pulls away, he was still smiling, his hand on your stomach now.

"Let's go have a baby," he says softly.
