When I opened my eyes, it wasn't the beeping of the machines that scared me. Neither was it my mum's sobbing. It was the darkness. Everything that surrounded me was black.
I couldn't see.
"My eyes, mum. What happened to my eyes?" Those were the first words that came out of my mouth. "My eyes!"
"Honey, honey, I'm here. Mummy's here." She embraced me.
She smelled like fresh laundry. Her voice was soft. But I couldn't see her.
"You'll be okay. I promise. It'll be okay."
That was when I knew that my life had changed.
