Mum called.

"Merry Christmas, honey," she said. "I'm so sorry I can't be there."

There was the sound of bells ringing.

"Sorry honey, I have to go. I love you!"

The line went dead.

"Merry Christmas, mummy. I love you too."

Across the street, I could hear the sounds of children laughing. There were families screaming "Merry Christmas!" at the top of their lungs.

Outside the door, I could hear people running along the corridor. Patients groaning in pain. Loved ones screaming at the top of their lungs.

That Christmas, I sat in silence.
