"Good." Skye said, his deep voice slightly sounding raspy.
He flipped open the file, and started to place pieces of paper in front of him, and then in front of me, a different copy. He then started to show me what we were going to do, he was going to ask me questions and on the answer sheet, he was to write the answer down. Big shock. But, then with my copy, slightly different, I was to answer these on my own. Sounded easy, no?
"First question, how do you sleep?" He asked casually.
"Fine."
"Elaborate." He replied, his eyes harder than before.
"I'm a light sleeper and I scream a few times a month. Other than that, nothing. No snores, no bleary eyed-ness, and I run on up to 4 hours of sleep." I said, in a rush, making sure he has time to write down the answers in between each sentence.
"Next, GPA?" He asked.
"3.80, also known as an A minus." I said, rolling my eyes at his expression.
"Smart girl. Next. Do you drive?"
"Yes, I'm a 17 year old, a senior, and I do drive. I drove my parents' extra car that belonged to me and my brother, Tristan. He was 16." I gulp down the burning sensation at the back of my throat. We were a year apart, and he was completely unexpected. He was getting his permit, and after I left for college for this coming fall, he would share with Kayleigh...
"I'm so sorry about your loss. That's the next question. How many siblings do you have? Err, did."
"Two, a brother and a sister." I barely whispered the words.
So, the questions just kept getting harder and more challenging, such as from medical family history to my social security to my social life. Ecetera, ecetera. I answered mindlessly, and before I knew it, I was done with my private test, too.
"What's the point of all this information?" I asked, when we were leaving the briefing room and going to the experimental room.
"It's just to build your profile and help us when we need to place your team." Amy said.
"Oh, so that was mindless work." I replied, before entering the room Skye opened. He didn't follow us in, he said he had to go but it was nice meeting me. I, of course, said my goodbyes before Amy and I ventured into the labratory that looked like a cross between a doctor's office, too.
"So, time for the torturous part of the process." By the look of my face, she outright laughed in my face.
"Trust... Me... It's not that bad."
"How am I supposed to trust you?!" I shrieked. "You just laughed in my face! Laughed!" I added, which only made her laugh harder.
"Ugh, you'll do fine, cousie. Plus, it was only a joke." She said, before finding an extra seat to sit on while I stood there, numb.
The door opened, and a man in a lab coat walked in, holding a clip board with a stethoscope hanging around his neck.
"Hello, Serafina. You must be our newest addition to the NGOJ, correct?"
I nodded my head, before shaking his hand.
"I'm Doctor Patrone, and I'll be doing your examination today." He said, grabbing a swiveling chair and pulling it over.
"Please, sit." He gestured to the bed-like bench behind me. I sat, where the paper crunched under my weight.
"So, what I'll be doing is just simple things. Blood, heart beat, ears, eyes, lungs, reflexes, blood pressure, and finally, I'll ask you to pee in a cup!" He said, a smile on his face. Like I said before, this office was very friendly and happy. I could get used to this place if I did have alien genes.
"Sounds good."
"Let me do the easy stuff first."
He put on his stethoscope, and listened to my heartbeat. After a minute, he asked me to cough and moved the end of the instrument to my right side to listen to my cough. Then, he moved to my back and placed it on my left side, addressing me to cough again. I did so, and then he pulled out the instrument that peers into the ear. (Sorry, do not know what it's called) He moved to my other one, and jotted down a few notes. He then pulled out from his coat pocket a stick with a triangle shape rubber end, and tapped both knees, making me kick out in response. He placed that back in his pocket, before pulling from the inside of the coat a tool which allowed light to shine in my eye. He asked me to look up, down, left and right for each eye, before finally pricking my finger to draw blood. I do not like getting this done, never liked it on account of my past doctor. He used to take a razor blade and prick it! Way to scar someone for life on getting blood drawn.
After he wrapped a band aid around my throbbing pinkie finger, he then wrapped the pressure padding around my upper right arm, and began to pump. He released his hold, and the air deflated, leaving me slightly dizzy.
So far, there has been silence, up until he pulled out a huge needle.
"I'm going to draw some blood. It will not hurt unless you tense up, then it'll hurt." (AN: I just got two shots a few weeks ago, and the second one hurt so badly because a) it was a certain shot, and b) I tensed up sooo much. But I got overall three shots (one up nose)) He softly chuckled, and I shook out my sholders, before placing my left arm into his awaiting hands.
"Done." I turned my head, not even feeling a thing. That's when I saw the blood dripping off my arm and the blood in a small baggie. I'm not scared of needles, but I'm uneasy around blood. (AN: I'm sooo not scared of either of them. But I do need my mother's hand to get a shot! Ik, big baby, but hey the thing about my old doctor did scare me alittle when I was a kid!)
"Now, you may pee in this cup, and place it in the metal box when you are done." He said simply, shoving a cup in my hand before opening a side door for me to use.
"Thanks." I mumbled, walking through the doorway and locking the door behind me.
I quickly peed in the cup, washed my hands, flushed the toilet, the whole routine, before placing the lukewarm paper cup into the cold metal box, and leaving the bathroom.
"All done." I announced, and the doctor and Amy cut their conversation.
"Well, then we are all done! It was nice meeting you, Serafina, and nice seeing you again, Amy."
I could see a slight blush forming on her cheeks, before we scrambled out of the room.
"What was that about?" I asked.
She looked away, before answering. "We had a thing when I first got here three months ago. It ended when I realized he had a wife." She said simply.
"Shut up! How far did you get with him? And he's like, what, thirty?"
"He's 27! And second base." She mumbled, before pushing open another door.
I rolled my eyes, before following her into a huge room, with white walls and white flooring.
There, standing in the middle of the floor, was Caleb and Terry.
