Being pregnant on the Snowpiercer was never easy, especially when the person pregnant was a Tailer. People in the tail had little resources for the people already there. When Mason Everett, the wife to Curtis Everett, became pregnant, many of the Tailers became hostile towards her. If her husband wasn't Curtis, they probably would've tossed her to the front and let them take care of her.

One night, while Mason pretended to sleep, she felt Curtis move beside her. She didn't want to worry him with her still being up, so she just shifted and kept her eyes closed.

Mason could feel Curtis put his hand on her stomach before she heard a faint whisper break through the silence.

"Hey baby." Mason peaked one eye open to see that Curtis was leaned over her stomach. She couldn't help but smile. It wasn't unusual for Curtis to want to speak to the baby, they thought it was best if they didn't address the fact that she was pregnant too much in case it pissed off the Tailers further. "Things aren't the way they used to be out here when I was a baby. You don't get to run around free in the backyard and play with a puppy or play with your friends on playgrounds during recess at school."

All those memories seemed so far away to Mason now. Back before Snowpiercer. When she was little and would play with her friends just down the road until her parents called for her to come home to supper. When she used to think boys were yucky and had cooties. How excited she had been for her first day in kindergarten. How she used to always want her parents to be there for her; with her. To watch her grow and become a young lady.

Mason had to refrain from wiping the tears that were forming in her still closed eyes. She missed her parents. She hated that they'd never see their grandchild. That they'd never meet Curtis.

She herself had met Curtis within the first few days on the Snowpiercer. They began a relationship not too long after meeting. They were both convinced they were going to die. That they were going to be killed by those in the front. So, they got married quickly. It was never a real, official wedding, but how were you supposed to have one of those on the Snowpiercer?

Years passed and the two of them just became stronger, both physically and in their relationship. Neither one of them regretted the quick marriage. In fact, they thought being married made them a bigger threat to anyone. If anyone hurt Mason, Curtis would kill them and vise versa.

Then, Mason became pregnant. It's not like there was any way to prevent it. The passengers on the Snowpiercer were encouraged to reproduce. That is, if they belonged to the front and could get the proper things to provide for the child. There was no condoms or birth control. And obviously, being married and all, Curtis and Mason had their urges.

"In fact," Curtis continued, bringing Mason out of her thoughts. "Things are worst. A lot worst. There are people who are angry at your mommy and daddy for having you because we have such little resources as it is. But we'll figure something out before you're born. We always do. Especially your mom. She's the smarter one of the family."

Mason resisted the urge to laugh.

"I wish I could say things will change before you're born, but I don't think they will," Curtis said. "It's been like this for years. Your mom and I, all of our friends shoved into the poorer part of the train. There's a lot of rules you'll be told to follow, but don't worry if you break them. Your daddy does that for a living."

Mason chuckled, but played it off as just a heavy sigh.

Curtis leaned down to kiss Mason's ever growing belly. "But I'll always protect you. No matter what, I'll keep you safe from anything and everything. You and your mom."

Mason felt Curtis kiss her cheek. She couldn't help but giggle as his beard scratched her face.

"I knew you were awake."

Mason opened her eyes to see Curtis' bright blue ones staring back down at her. She couldn't help but smile and shift closer to him so she could kiss him.

"I love you," she whispered.

"I love you, too," he replied. "And our little miracle."

Mason smiled and kissed Curtis again before cuddling into his side and slowly drifting back to sleep.
