"What do you mean I was supposed to be one of them?" I ask him incredulously.
"Well, it's pretty self explanatory. Based on the answers you provided during your test, you have been classified as undefined. Meaning there's no job that suits your personality. Which then leads to you being part of the Courageous." He explains to me.
"You're insane, it could just be a misunderstanding. Me? A Courageous, that's absurd!"
"It's not though, have you ever wanted to speak up when someone was in trouble or wanted to save someone from a Criminal? You know, go against how everyone's told to behave or act in certain situations."
"Well, I remember one time when I was younger, there was this girl in my class who refused to do schoolwork because she didn't understand what to do. The teacher started to yell at her, totally against school policy, by the way, and I felt like I should have said something to help the girl out. But I remembered what my mom used to tell me, something about keeping to myself and I'll stay safe."
"That's it! That's exactly what a Courageous would do. Wait, did you hear that?"
"Hear what?"
Then I heard it, it sounded like someone yelling someone else's name. They were yelling for someone named Tom.
"Is your name Tom?" I ask him.
"Yes, it is. Are they yelling for me?"
At this point our voices have dropped to a whisper. Why? I'm not sure yet.
"Yah, they are."
"I know you're here Tom!" The person yelled. I'm guessing at this point Tom had heard them yelling because his face had turned from curiosity to fear.
"What's wrong?" I asked him.
"We need to leave now!" He frantically says. He grabs my arm before I have a chance to say anything and starts pulling me away from where we heard the people talking.
We run through another door that leads to a room with even more doors. We stop in the middle for about two seconds before Tom decides which door we need to go through. He pulls me through and we go down a very long hallway. We go until the hallway ends, we push through the door and it takes us outside. Tom pulls me to an area that is covered and hard to find unless you know where it's at already, he seems to know the spot. We duck down and he motions for me to keep quiet. I'm pretty sure my heart is beating so loud anybody that came by could probably hear it.
A few moments later, I hear the door opening and the sound of footsteps come through it.
"Where'd they go?" I hear one man say.
"They must have ran that way, come on!" Another says in response, I hear them running in the direction away from us. I peek above our hiding spot and see three guys running off in search of us.
"Okay, what the hell is going on Tom?"
"They were a few people that know of my work, and they look for me whenever there's another testing day just in case I find someone like you." He says to me. It does nothing but confuse me even further.
"That made absolutely no sense to me Tom, could you elaborate, maybe, a lot?"
"We should probably get you somewhere safer before I tell you what exactly is happening." He says.
"How do I know to trust you? What if you're actually a Criminal trying to kidnap me? At least enlighten me on that."
"I'm not a Criminal and did I or did I not just save you from those guys?"
He had me there. If it weren't for him, I probably would have been long gone with those guys by now.
"Okay, I suppose I'll put a bit more trust into you. But, where exactly would a safe place be?"
"That's a good question, you're name is Arelia, correct?"
"Yah, is that important?" I ask.
"Is your mother (LOOK UP NAME IN BOOK) Knight?"
"It is, why?" He just ignores me and keeps thinking.
"Can you take me to your house? I'd like to speak with your mother. It's important."
"I guess, as long as you don't have anything funny hiding up your sleeve."
He laughs at me and assures me he doesn't. I get up with him following shortly behind me. I start walking in the general direction of my house, which thankfully is away from where those guys ran in search of us. I still keep to the backstreets just in case they turned around.
It's a pretty big city, there's a lot of Commoners in this world, this is all we know of for life, no traveling like I've read in books about the past that I'm pretty sure I wasn't supposed to have access to. As far as we know, there's nothing more to this world, but I know that's not true, I know this planet is so much bigger than what we learn in primary school.
I lead Tom down the streets, approaching my house. We take one more turn to the right and I can see it down the road.
My house isn't the only thing I see though. It's those guys, they're at the end of the road. Their backs are currently turned away from us, but I have a feeling that won't last long. I grab Tom's hand and drag him into my neighbors back yard. He looks at me questioningly and I just point towards the road where the guys are. He peeked over really quick and ducked back down even quicker. He looked over at me and nodded his head in understanding.
We went through my neighbors yard over into mine. I pulled Tom up onto my porch and yanked him through the back door before slamming it shut. My heart was going a thousand beats a minute.
"Arelia!?" My mom yells. "Is that you?"
"Yah, mom, I'm here and I have someone who wants to talk to you."
I can hear my mom coming downstairs and walking towards the kitchen, which is where the back door is. When she walks in and sees Tom, I notice a look of shock on her face. Almost as if she knows him.
"Tom?" She questions.
"Hey, LOOK UP NAME IN BOOK." Tom says back.
"Wait a second, do you guys know each other?" I ask them.
"Yes, Arelia, this is your father."
