Chapter One Hundred & Twenty-Nine

When I came back to the compound, and went to our room, I found Elijah standing in front of the mirror. He was unbuttoning his shirt cuffs, but after a few seconds, he froze. I watched him for a moment, and saw it. He was frightened. He was scared of something. It reminded me of the night that he awoke from the comatose Esther put him into, when he couldn't stop thinking of what he had done all those years ago.

"Elijah," I said, but he didn't look up. "Elijah, are you alright?"

He came out of the daze he seemed to be in, and looked up at me. He blinked a few times before finally speaking.

"Yes, of course. I'm alright, darling," he nodded.

I shook my head. "Elijah, I can tell when you're lying. I will respect your wishes if you don't want to tell me what's wrong, but... I'm also here if you wish to get something off of your chest."

He stayed quiet for a second, and I walked over to the desk. I opened one of the drawers and pulled out a few sage leaves from the small bag I kept them in, then pulled out a dish as well. I whispered a few words, before the sage caught fire.

"There," I said. "If you wish to tell me something, you can be confident that the information will not be heard by anyone but the two of us."

He swallowed a little. "Roseia, I... I remembered something else that I did years ago. Something that was hidden behind the red door."

He moved over to the bed and sat down on it, and I went to take a seat by him.

"Whatever it is, you must know that it will never change my opinion of you," I told him, reaching up to lay a hand on his cheek and graze my thumb against his cheekbone. He looked me in the eyes, and I saw the fear in them begin to slowly fade away. "I love you for all that you are, and that includes your past sins."

He reached up to put his hand over mine, leaning into my palm. "You cannot be sure of that," he said. "I... I ruined Niklaus."

I furrowed my brow, and he continued.

"When we needed to flee my father, before we knew you, Aurora wanted to come with us."

I knew of Aurora, she was Tristan's younger sister. Niklaus had told me of her. She was the first woman to ever truly break him.

"I was against her leaving because she was not of our blood," he said. "I was... I was very cautious at the time, even moreso than I am now. I didn't want her to come with us. I told her so, and she said that she knew things about Niklaus that not even I did. And for the first time, I compelled someone."

My lips parted in surprise. He had told me before that the first time he compelled someone was an accident and a mistake, but I had no idea that Aurora was the first person he did it to.

"She told me that Niklaus killed our mother. I became enraged, of course... And I accidentally compelled her to stop loving him. I made her see him for the monster I thought he was," he swallowed, closing his eyes for a moment. "And so she stayed, and we fled. I set my brother's course. I made him cold and unforgiving."

I didn't know what to say at first, but in my heart I knew that I truly meant what I had said to him. I would always love him, no matter what. This would never change my mind, even though he feared otherwise.

"I know that you may feel guilt for this, but the truth is, Niklaus made his own choices. You may have had a small amount of influence, but at the end of the day, he set his own course through his own mistakes. It isn't all your fault, Elijah."

"Roseia, if he finds out-"

"He will forgive you. He will understand. And if he doesn't, I will make him understand. You don't need to worry," I told him, the corners of my lips pulling up into a small smile.

He didn't seem completely convinced, but then he turned and took my into his arms. He held me close, and I could feel his hands shaking against my skin.

"I love you, Elijah," I whispered.

"I love you too, my darling," he said, holding me a little tighter.

I knew that he wasn't afraid of Niklaus' reaction. He was afraid of himself. He was afraid that everything he had done and forgotten about would come back to haunt him, and he was right in thinking that. He needed to be prepared, now that he knew all of the dark deeds that were hidden behind that door.

If anything came back to harm him, I would strike it down and protect him with my life. That is simply what you do for the people you love.

You put them above everything else. Always.

*

When I awoke, Elijah was gone. He left a note for me, saying that he was with Niklaus. I didn't know exactly what they were doing, but when I walked into the courtyard, I most definitely wished they were here.

It bothered me that Aurora would send such an atrocity to our home, especially on a holiday such as this one.

The Axeman of New Orleans was a murderer that was especially active during the summer and fall of 1919. He used an actual axe for the majority of the murders, thus why he was named the Axeman. He terrorized the people of New Orleans for months, and then, in March, he sent a letter to many different local newspapers. In the letter, he portrayed himself as a demon. He said that, since he was a reasonable spirit, he would make a bargain with the people. He had a particular love of Jazz music, so he said that every house that had a jazz band in full swing would be spared. No one would die in that particular building. Because of that, the majority of homes in New Orleans had a jazz party going on the Tuesday night after he sent the letter. Even though many weapons-bearing citizens actually challenged the Axeman through advertisements, no one died that night. He was dormant for a few months, but then he returned to kill three more. There were 12 confirmed victims of the Axeman's murderous tendencies. Many of the people of the supernatural community, myself included, believed it was a witch. I just had a feeling that magic was involved.

I kept looking down at the body, soon realizing that it was reminiscent of the stories Elijah and Klaus had told me of their time with Aurora. I bit my lip a little and crossed my arms over my chest, trying to decide what the hell I was supposed to do. I was going to pull out my phone and call one of the brothers when I felt their presence outside the abattoir. I went outside to the street only to see them walking down the sidewalk, only half a block away.

"Elijah!" I called. "Klaus! You need to come inside!"

They both looked up with expressions of equal worry and anxiety. They rushed to the door, and Elijah immediately asked me if I was alright.

"I am, but I think that Aurora has... Well, I believe she has left a gift for Niklaus inside."
