"WELCOME BACK, MILA."

    "Were you waiting?"

    "You wish."

    "..."

They're on opposite sides, separated by a bookshelf and backs to each other. This idea drawn across the expansive map of Camila's brain presents itself as romantic. It is. Terribly romantic.

    "How were the exam cookies?"

    "Could be better."

    "Hm?"

"I'm a hard man to please."

    "If you say so."

    "How's your paper?"

"Going bad. I can't find my fourth piece of evidence."

    "That's too sad. But..."

    "Yeah?"

"You are in a library. Lots of resources."

"Is that what you do? Come here and sleep around resources?"

"You're absolutely right, Mila. A different book under my head every time so I can absorb everything in it!"

She breaks out in laughter. They're one of the only two in this section of the library and she shuts her laptop screen, neck relaxing. Camila sighs and stares at the tall ceiling, the slow filtration of light through the thin windows.

    "What's your topic on?"

    "The human condition."

    "And your argument?"

"The human condition has been long recorded, the original Hebrew text of the Bible citing it not as religion, but as a study. The human condition is fragile but it is biological. Bonds cannot break blood. Or vice versa."

    "Jesus."

"And yet so many people come to interpret Genesis as history to further their political agenda. That is also a human condition."

"You don't sound like you need much help."

"I do, Laurent. I really do. Because this is due at 11:59 tonight and I have a concert that ends at 10:30. Do you see my dilemma?"

"Get an extension? Or talk to your teacher?"

    "..."

    "..."

"You're right. See you around, Mr. Grinch."

Camila Bean packs up her bags and peeks around the corner. Laurent's eyes are shut and she can see the faint veins running along his eyelids. Up close, he smells like the combination of heady citrus and a soft caress of vanilla. Undeniably addictive.

His left eye peeks open and his pupils slide her into view, the eye that's sapphire-infiltrated steel. He smiles lethargically and goes back to focusing on his nap.
