Chapter 2 ~ [ Sacrifices ]

* 4 years later, ~~, 10:57pm, Sanguinem, in Ferid Bathroy's mansion *
Every single one of the kids had a smile on their faces, sparks in their eyes, butterflies in their stomachs. They were all excited, jumping around, eager to leave. Longing for the freedom they would finally get.

Everyone except (y/n).

She knew it, she felt it deep inside the pit of her stomach. The dread of knowing the outside world was so close to them and yet it was so far away. Hadn't it been too easy to get out of Sanguinem? It was almost sad for her to think about how humans were so easily blinded to all the dangers around them by happiness.

It was so sad. So undeniable and true.

She had spent four whole years with the Hyakuya family, and she couldn't help the special place in her heart they had. But vampires had been with her for so long... It was hard imagining her small human family replacing Krul or Ferid when they had cared for her for many years before. They were older, stronger, they knew better.

So why did she feel like a traitor to everyone? Maybe she was betraying everyone.

She felt like she was betraying herself. But Takeo had said it was necessary to get out of the vampire city no matter what. The fact time had been so coincidentally right for Mika to say they would leave, and for Ferid to know that... She knew fate was stubborn.

"I'm a little worried... We reached the gate too easily. Are you sure this leads outside?" Yuu asked Mika, eyeing his surroundings suspiciously.

The female couldn't help but bite her bottom lip when she heard Yuu ask just what she was thinking. She prayed secretly someone else would back him up with that idea. She hoped someone would save them now that she no longer could.

"Everything's fine, the exit is here. At least according to this map, it is." Mika opened the large piece of paper and trailed a line with his finger over it, nodding afterwards at the others when he made sure the place they had reached was their real destination. He smiled gently, saying, "Besides, I don't think vampires expect humans to try to escape." He took one last look at the map. "After all, the virus is still rampaging out there."

Mika turned to look at (y/n), who turned to the floor immediately, almost as if she was scared he would see something in her that she didn't want anyone seeing. Still, he noticed how closely (y/n) was listening to the boys as they spoke. "Livestock won't leave the pen even though it is full of cracks and openings. The same goes for us, they're taking us for fools."

"But we are going to escape," Yuu remarked, feeling more determined than he had ever been.

Mika smiled as he stared approvingly at Yuu. "We're not livestock. Besides, I'm a genius."

The younger children cheered excitedly at that. They trusted him and he trusted himself. Some of the children even decided to self-proclaim themselves geniuses too, their hopes fueled when Mika nodded his agreement with them.

Yuu rested his hands on his hips and watched all the kids gather around Mika as he made his way toward (y/n), who had been awfully quiet until the moment.

"All the members of the Hyakuya Orphanage family are geniuses!" Mika stated. "All but Yuu."

Yuu pouted, feeling left out. "Quit it already."

(Y/n) couldn't help but smile despite the dread coiling inside her chest. She was nervous but the happiness of the Hyakuya family raised her spirits, even if only slightly—it was awfully contagious. She turned to look up at Yuu just as he looked down at her. Their eyes met, bright green colliding with a glittering (e/c). They stared at each other for a moment, before the girl shied away and blushed. The male smiled and patted her head, making a new wave of scarlet wash over her entire face. She couldn't help but slightly grin at the male whom she was starting to see as a very close friend or brother. It had taken effort and time, but they had grown closer than she thought they ever would. Her smile died quickly enough, though, and she sobered again.
