The Here and Now

A wooden bowl rattles through the door's 'cat flap' and skitters across the floor leaving a brown gungy skid-mark in its wake. The rancid smell makes me gag and the sight of maggots floating in the sewer-coloured broth adds to the nightmare which is mealtime in this place. As the bowl touches my lips, I retch but hunger forces me to swallow deep. I feel a maggot wriggling in my mouth and chew on it knowing it'll improve the taste of this disgusting gruel.
