Trying Not to Sleep

He lay in the dark, concentrating on keeping his eyes open. He was tired but didn't want to sleep. He didn't want to fall from the ceiling or see the Frankenstein man again. He listened to the familiar sounds of the house. His little brother's steady breathing in the bunk beneath him. The soft shudder as a gust of wind picked up and pushed against the side of the house. The tic-tic-tic of toenails on linoleum as his dog, Pepsi, walked through the kitchen to his water dish. Comforting sounds, but he continued to force himself not to sleep.


He stared out the window listening to the wind. Then there was a flash of light from outside. It made a shape. It was all white and there was a round center, like a big paper plate. On each side there was a piece extended that resembled a wing. Bat wings. A big round flash of light with bat wings. He screamed until Mom and Dad came into the room.
