As Anna followed steadily several cars behind Jake, they were going faster than she ever would have once they got through the roughest of the mountains and hit the straight-away. She had never driven that fast in public to risk getting pulled over. The only time she sped was on her back-valley mountains where cops rarely patrolled unless there was a car accident caused by speeding or drunk driving.
Jake was tired when she saw him leave, but it didn't look like he was going to slow down any time soon. The only stop they had made so far was at a trucker's rest stop. While Jake got gas and ran to the bathroom, Anna bought coffee and vitamins. Once he went into the restaurant to purchase coffee and food, she fueled up and used the restroom. It was perfect timing to get back on the road behind him a few cars away.
Anna and Jake had hit rain several times, but the roads got dryer through California even as they hit Sacramento to head towards Nevada. They rushed into the fast-flowing traffic of Sacramento at lunchtime and turned off towards Las Vegas.
Anna wondered what was really keeping him awake. She followed him without dropping speed unless it was necessary. She bet the reason he drove faster was so he could get there earlier. Anna knew Jake had to already be sore from the fall he took on the mountain. The stiffness in his body would be worse cramped in one position on the long drive.
"I would love to relieve his stiffness." Anna said to her windshield as her focus was on Jake's truck a few vehicles ahead of her. Her thoughts ran to starting with a full-body massage. Anna giggled wildly at the wonderful images running through her head.
The sound of her phone dinging gave her a start. Her music was off in the car, so she could save the battery on her phone. Her charger laid at the bottom of her bag which she regretted not grabbing before she left the station. With a quick glance, she saw that her father texted a message asking for an update. Since she was close to Las Vegas she was nervous to respond. She took a moment to send a quick message back telling him they were having fun, being safe, and productive. This made her laugh because she was texting while she was driving, and that was highly dangerous. Anna promised him she would keep him updated. She didn't fully want to lie to him just yet, so she gave him what she could say was only technically true. It was how she had learned to lie to him, give him the truth but in a gentle version, and let him make what he wanted out of it.
This time though, Anna didn't want him to consider anything other than what she was telling him. She wasn't sure if her father was going to believe everything she was laying down. She needed to start coming up with some lies quick or he won't hesitate to send for Nate, and that was something she couldn't allow to happen. She'd lose Jake forever then. The only thing about driving that made her uncomfortable was that Anna had always thought her father knew where she was no matter what story she gave him. But if she kept good positive communication with him, he'd continue to be open and give her a hint as to what he was thinking. With how good she was feeling right now she didn't think that would be very hard. Anna just had to make sure Harmony didn't find out she was gone, or she'd try to mess things up for her.
It was getting close to eight o'clock, and they were about half an hour away from Las Vegas. Anna felt so nervous she started to sweat. Snow lay quietly on the surrounding mountains, but the city was lit up brighter than Christmas everywhere with celebrations of welcoming the New Year. The tiredness faded and Anna felt alive and excited.
When they pulled into the city of Las Vegas, it was cooler than Anna had expected it would be. She wondered if the nearby snow-covered mountains brought the nice relief from the constant desert heat and heat of the sins that happen here. With every second she got closer, the more Anna felt like she was in some perverted fairyland of riches and naughty little secrets. It was stunning. Each building was decorated with lights in the grandeur of Christmas and New Year's themes which made everything even more truly beautiful.
