I'm shy and want to be confident

Um, hi alex (>_<) this is my first time, so I'm just gonna go out and say it. My mum is always scolding me for being too quiet in school, to be more involved in class discussions ( too be honest I don't know half of the things their talking about) to smile more but I can't just simply smile for no reason plus the fact I'm moving schools from an all-girls to mixed and as you've probably guessed I'm quite the shy person. I just cant start a conversation with someone I hardly know without it being awkward and I wanna become a confident person just not the cocky type, I'm seriously worrying about adapting to the new change like literally, the first time I visited it was like I was seeing eagles everywhere! o.o (bit too dramatic yeah sorry bout that) just staring and judging me, I know this is stupid compared to others' confessions of problems but what can I do to change?

No no this isn't stupid at all. Surprisingly a lot of people are shy and they don't know how to adapt to an enviorment that's different from that one. When I went to school I was quiet and stuff. I just ended up with my head down most the time and got my school work done and on occasion I would make a few friends here and there. Well all I can say is that people will stare and judge because you are new but don't pay any mind to them. What you can first start to do is is walking in a room with confidence, head up high and walk like you are somebody. Usually people will react to this and be like "Hey I want to get to know her." Which will end up one or two people introducing themselves first instead of you. And what I always say to other people is to never change unless you want to change so if you don't want to change then don't. Do you still make friends even though you were the way you were? Then you shouldn't find a problem with making friends just the way you are now. But I mean confidence is shone by how you carry yourself so if you dress nice, are nice, and walk like you sparkle then really something will draw people in.
