Chapter 11
The walk seemed to take longer than the three hours that Kat promised. Maybe it was because of the silence between Chloe and Kevin or maybe it was cause Chloe was literally dead on her feet. Either way when the group finally walked out of the tree cover and saw the giant brick mansion she breathed a great sigh of relief.
“Welcome to Mason’s School for Gifted Individuals.” Kat said with a huge smile on her face. “Or as most of us call it. Home.”
Chloe just stared up at the mansion in front of her. There was a large lawn area between them and the mansion. Two stair cases lead to a large balcony of the very large brick mansion covered in ivy. It rose 4 stories and Chloe could see at least two wings and had no doubt that there was probably a lot more.
“How many people live here?” she asked.
Kat started walking across the lawn as she answered. “There’s normally about two hundred students here at any given time along with five or six instructors.”
“Six adults to look after two hundred kids? That math doesn’t seem to work out properly.” Kevin said as he followed along.
“Not all the students are children. We actually have a good size adult population that are here for assistance. Most of them came into their abilities late in life and it seems that adults have a harder time adjusting then children do. Probably something to do with the fact that adults have spent all their life being told that things like this can’t happen.”
The three of them walked across the large manicured lawn and up the white marble steps. At the top was a pair of double doors that opened to what looked like a games room.
The room had hard wood floors and a wooden chair rail. Groups of couches made up conversation areas with the largest grouping being around the large flat screen TV. There were assorted table games scattered around as well.
Chloe glanced over at Kevin who was pacing back and forth. “What’s wrong?”
Kevin stopped pacing and shrugged. “I don’t know. I feel...trapped. I think the animal side of me enjoyed being outside too much. It doesn’t like being inside.”
“Well if that’s the case I’m sure we can find a room for you that opens onto the garden so you can go for a run whenever you want.” Came a voice from behind Chloe.
Chloe spun around and fell over in shock. For there in front of her was a gentleman coming through the wall. As he stepped clear he adjusted the collar of his dark grey three piece business suit.
Walking over to Chloe he reached a hand down to help her up. “I’m sorry if I startled you. I am use to people around here being accustom to my entrances.”
“How did you do that?” Chloe asked as she used the gentleman’s hand to stand up. As she stood she took a good look at him. He stood about 6 foot 3 and was fairly fit for a man of his age. He looked to be in his late 60’s and had short cut grey hair and deep gray eyes.
“It’s my ability. I’m able to match the vibrations of my atoms to that of a given object which then allows me to move threw that object.” He said with a smile. “But this is rude of me. My name is Mason and I have to say I’m very glad you two have made it to us. I’m sure you are both very tired and would like to sleep, eat and wash up. I’ll show you to your rooms and have some food sent up to you. Then tomorrow when your all rested we can talk.”
