Jackal felt the familiar warmth rush over his cheeks and his heart rate speeding up as he gazed at his friend's sleeping face. He felt himself moving closer to her face, yet he couldn't stop himself. Soon, he could feel her cool breath of his face and his heart sped up even more, skipping beats and pounding desperately against his chest. The distance between the two grew smaller and smaller until his lips almost grazed the surface of Lucy's pink cheeks.
Suddenly, fireworks erupted, exploding into a display of vibrant color in the darkened sky. The loud noise snapped Jackal out of his trance and woke up Lucy.
"The fireworks started?" Lucy asked, rubbing her eyes to wake up more. Jackal's face lit up with embarassment, realizing what he did. "Are you okay? You look a little red." Lucy observed, staring in Jackal's golden eyes.
"I-I didn't do nothing. I'm fine!" He stuttered, avoiding Lucy's eyes. "Just watch the damn show, quit lookin' at me like that." He muttered stubbornly, using his hand to move Lucy's face to look upwards. She gave a small shrug, but watched the fireworks without further complaints.
At the end of the show, a young couple and their child approached the pair, the little boy was crying hysterically.
"Excuse me, miss, is that your dog?" The man asked, his voice quivering.
"Actually, no, we're trying to find her owners. Is she yours?" Lucy questioned, her observation based on the boy's crying.
"Yes, she is. Thank you so much for finding her. She got out a few weeks ago." The wife explained. Lucy handed over Yuki's leash and watched her follow her family closely, her tail wagging. Watching the little dog leave made Lucy envy her; Being reunited with the people she loved.
Jackal identified the sadness in Lucy's expression and hastily grabbed her arm and lead her home.
Inside of their comfortable home, he still had Lucy's arm in his grasp and lead her to the backroom- her bedroom. He let go of her arm, and tore down the curtain that hid her depressing board.
"We're going to fix this." He growled, he was angry. Lucy was completely at a loss because of a few idiots, and Jackal was determined to help her. Lucy was in shock at the sudden change of attitude Jackal exhibited, and slightly fearful when he began to tear things ruthlessly off of her carefully constructed board.
"What are you doing, Jackal?" Lucy asked, her voice cracked as she shouted, her hard work falling to the floor in small shredded pieces of scrap paper.
"This asshole made you sad, so we're gonna find him and hunt him down. And the rest of these fairy bastards too." Jackal promised, his eyes burning with hatred. Lucy sniffed up built up tears and smiled, she saw this as Jackal's effort of helping. She nodded in agreement, helping him take down the paper.
A few months passed, and their board had been covered corner to corner in sightings, addresses, news articles, and other clippings of information on her friends. Despite having no success in finding anyone, she kept her head held high.
Fall was coming to an end, making way for the bitterly cold mornings and chilly breezes. All of the dead leaves blew away, the trees bare and tired. Lucy closed the door to her house, locking it before facing the cold temperature. The wind nipped at her nose and any other places where her skin was exposed. She pulled her scarf up further, putting her head down and picking her pace up to get to work. Behind her, Jackal watched through the window as she disappeared from his sight. He no longer followed her to work because of his hostile attitude towards Lucy's mentor, Jason. While she was gone, Jackal generally stayed home, lazing around on the couch until Lucy returned. He laid himself on the couch, hanging the upper half of his body off of the upholstered surface, when the door's lock clicked and the knob turned. The noise caught Jackal by surprise; Lucy usually got home much later! His frustration only grew when the person who walked into their home was not Lucy, but someone Jackal was not fond of...Happy belated New Year!
