Chapter 2
Ryan
Happy birthday son!
Happy birthday Ryan!
Happy birthday!
Happy birthday!
Happy birthday!
The congratulations rung in my ears like distant echoes. It was almost tragic how everyone started their sentences with happy, when I was anything but that. My birthday was my least favorite day of the year. It marked another year for me without my mate.
"Leave me alone, I'm not in the mood" I grumbled, my hand clutching around the glass filled with amber colored liquid, whiskey.
My friends all sighed, but at the same time looked at me with sympathy, because they had somewhat expected a reaction like this from me. "Leave us for a little while" I heard my father tell them, as he was also here to wish me a happy birthday. I don't know what I was thinking when I thought I could get some peace and quiet alone in the living room.
He sat down beside me, folding his hands together. "It's been going on for 6 years now. You're acting worse everyday" he started, to which I rolled my eyes. I knew damn well how I was, but the hatch is that I didn't care, not one damn bit.
"You know it's not exactly frowned upon to not have a mate, but with being the next in line as alpha comes certain expectations" he said.
My fingers tightened around the glass, and I took a big chug of it before I let out a humorless laugh; "Really? I was never aware of that!"
"You need to get your act together, you're 22 years old today" he replied.
"What's with stating the obvious dad?" I erupted and slammed the glass down on the coffee table, standing up from the white couch.
"I'm saying you need to try harder, get your act together and continue searching for your mate if that's what you want to so bad instead of sulking around about it!" he said firmly, standing up too to meet my level.
I could feel the anger burn in my veins as he spoke those words. He knew it was a sore subject. "It's easy for you to say! Year after year I have to watch everyone find their mate, just stand by and watch everyone be happy! I have searched for 6 years and there is no single trace of her. I have done everything I can!" I shouted.
A pack in my opinion needed both and alpha and alpha female, also called Luna. I wasn't worried about loosing the alpha title, I was a worried of living the rest of my life alone. Actually, I wasn't worried about it. I was afraid.
"I know you have. But with inheriting my position one day, you have a bigger burden on your shoulders than others. You need to try harder, she's out there somewhere" He said.
Being alpha soon, everyone was on update if I had a mate or not, no one blamed me, complained or said anything about it and they all knew. You could see the sympathetic looks they sent me as I passed by them in the house. Pity the mate-less alpha. If a normal ranked pack member didn't have a mate at the same age as me, it was nothing special about it. No one would even care that way.
People wanted me to have a mate, but it wasn't an absolute demand for me to lead the pack, but it was desired. I desired it because I just wanted someone to love and care for, someone to love me in return.
