Ch35- Pestilence- Part 1

'Lucas

“Bloody hell! Fucking fly!” the words were out of my mouth before I even knew it, the fight or flight mode within me telling me to flee. We weren’t going to win this. I unfurled my wings fast and flew straight towards Caden, lifting him up by his left arm I looked at the girl next to me who was holding Caden’s other arm,  she gave me a swift nod and we both propelled ourselves forward and flew through the forest, I looked behind me and noticed Luna catching up with us.

My thoughts weren’t coherent the only thing on my mind was getting the hell out of here quickly and as safe as possible.  The trees were a blur as we flew, my arms were feeling slightly sore from holding Caden up, he had passed out so he was deadweight now. My heart beat fast in my chest and my head felt like it was going to split open, casting a quick glance to my right I noticed Ayden and Sky flying next to each other as they skilfully dodge the trees in this dense forest.

We didn’t know where we were going we were just flying, hoping we would get out of here. All of a sudden a red and orange blur flew above us and the tree before us burst into flames, the fire hungrily licking at the wood.  I looked behind me and my heart almost fell to my shoes, they were catching up to us and the look on Luna’s face could only be described using one word-evil.

The girl next to me screamed in agony I looked over at her and gasped, her wing was on fire. She flapped it haphazardly trying desperately to diffuse the flame.  She wailed as the flame devoured her right wing. I could only watch in horror as she cried, I quickly steered us to the right we narrowly missed a tree.

“We are going to kill you!” Luna’s voice rang through the air, it was like a knife to the heart, I visibly flinched at her harsh words.

“Arianna! Slow down let me help you!” yelled Sky as he carried on flying.

The girl-Arianna- gasped as she fought back her tears, “We can’t they will catch up!” she hissed in pain and slowly I watched as her wing started going black at the tips, the fire was slow which made it more painful. Sky angled his body slightly and hovered closer to Arianna and I watched in amazement as a spurt of ice came gushing out of his hands and onto Arianna’s wing, diffusing the fire.  Sky didn’t even have time to check if she was ok before another ball of fire erupted from Luna’s hands and just missed Sky’s face by inches.  His eyes were wide and he was gasping in shock, not able to utter a word.

“This way!” yelled Ayden, I diverted my attention to him and flew after him as he disappeared into the darker part of the forest.  We weren’t going to lose them; they were going to kill us. I didn’t want to die this way! Not by the hands of my sister.

Arianna and I were struggling to catch up to Ayden and Sky, luckily Sky turned around and took the place of Arianna and Ayden tried to help her fly. We flew for God knows how many hours, trying desperately to evade our attackers.  When we would think everything was clear and we had escaped a fire ball would fly out of nowhere and hit something in front of us.

Then realisation hit me, they weren’t trying to kill us. No. They were just toying with us; this was all a game for them, were nothing but their toys. No sooner had I thought of that statement did I yell at Sky. “They are toying with us Sky; if they wanted to kill us we would have been dead already. We should hide until the coast is clear,” he looked at me before he threw his weight down and we started flying towards a darker part of the forest, Ayden followed us silently as he desperately tried to hold Arianna up as she was using only one wing to maintain in the air. We landed and I yelled at everyone to shush. What seemed to be hours, when in mere fact it could only have been minutes I looked up ahead as I watched the two villains fly away, further from us. I let out a breath I didn’t even know I was holding and collapsed against a tree, a nervous laugh escaped my lips. Never in my life would I have thought I would be alive to witness the world end, hell to see my sister chase after me with a murderous look in her eyes.

I was scared; in all honesty...I was petrified.

“At least we made it out alive,” whispered Arianna. I looked over at her; I really wanted to know who she was. Half of her wing was charred the ice that was frozen onto it had broken off a while ago. It would take a couple of weeks to heal at most as the burn was not that bad...but I cannot come to comprehend the amount of pain she must be going through.

“We need to get home, the kingdom must be in complete havoc, wondering where the hell we all are. We need to find Dandre, Cole and Hayden they can help us,” said Ayden. I nodded at him but first we needed to figure out how the hell we were going to get out of this freaking forest. With two injured people and psychopaths on our tails.

My brothers are complete and utter asses. They never tell me where they go! Never, I am always left in the dark; I sat down on my bed and held my head in my hands. I was stressed out, the kingdom was freaking out, they didn’t know where Ayden was neither did they know where Luna was. It was as if a pandemic of epic proportion just broke out in a matter of days.

Suddenly I heard loud yells and screams from woman and children; I got up my eyes darting to the door. I rushed out of it, looking up and down the halls. People were screaming, running around frantically. I grabbed one of the maids by the arm, her panicked expression did nothing but increase my heart rate.

“What is going on?” I demanded her, her breathing was hitched as she tried to explain to me what was happening, she was waving her arms around frantically, her black hair whipping into her face, muffling her voice.  I couldn’t make out a word. “Relax,” I stated calmly to her, helping her match her breathing to mine. Once she had significantly calmed down she looked at me, her eyes going teary.

“It’s the Apocalypse! It is here Prince Hayden! As it was foretold so shall it be, its pestilence Prince Hayden! The peasants, the peasants...” she broke out into sobs and it took me minutes to try and calm her down, I shook her gently trying to get her attention back.

“The peasants your majesty, the peasants have a disease, a disease that the Gods spoke about. We are all going to die!” her voice was shrill at the end and she collapsed to the ground. I was shocked I didn’t know what to do, she was freaking out. I bent down to her level, trying to ignore the hordes of people rushing past me, screaming their heads off.

“Lissa,” I said loudly in her ear trying to bring her back from her panicked state. Her eyes were darting around nervously as she screamed and rocked herself back and forth. “What’s happening Lissa, tell me. Why is everyone so panicked? What’s going on?” I shook her gently trying to get her to answer me.

She looked up at me and I was shocked at the terror in her brown eyes and she whispered ever so softly, there was no denying the absolute horror in her voice,” The peasants...the peasants are eating people.”
