"He's in Avenger's Tower," I said down the phone, my voice monotone. Jessica was still in Siberia searching for Kilgrave. "I'm killing him."
"I'm sorry about your sister," she said solemnly.
"I'm sorry about your sister," I said back, equally as solemnly.
"I have to tell you something. Under normal circumstances, I'd wait until we were together, or until you were in a stable mind-set. But I need Kilgrave dead, and I know that what I'm about to say will make you kill him."
"I'm killing him no matter what, but tell me."
"Luke called me, he and some of the guys were fighting in London..."
"I know, I sent them there. So what?" I asked. All of my energy was being used to not think of my sister, I didn't have the strength for anything else.
"He just told me... Steve. Steve died."
I couldn't speak, I couldn't move. The world faded around me. I dropped the phone and kept walking, Avengers Tower getting closer and closer to me. I had walked into that building many times, but never feeling like this. Everything we were fighting for meant nothing if Steve wasn't here. And if Steve couldn't survive this, I didn't even want to think about everyone else, who I had yet to hear from. Who else had we lost?

I walked into the building feeling numb. Kilgrave had to be here. But if he wasn't, I'd find him. I'd hunt him to the edge of the earth and make him pay for what he'd done.
The building was unusually quiet. I don't think I'd ever been inside when no one else was here, even a Stark Industries employee.
"Kilgrave!" I called. At first there was nothing, but then I heard a noise from the floor above me. Taking the stairs two at a time, I ran to the next floor. Then I heard footsteps on the flight of stairs above me. I followed them, climbing further and further until we were on the 19th floor.
I followed the steps into a room. The door behind me automatically locked as I shut it. I ran to the door ahead of me, it was also locked. There was something in this room that Kilgrave wanted me to see. As I turned, I noticed a glass window. I ran to it, leaning my head against it to see if there was anyone there. I banged on it, and to my surprise, someone came into view. They looked familiar, but I couldn't place where I knew them from. Then I saw her clearly.
"Mom?"
I'd been waiting for this moment, yearning for it. The woman who I'd been searching for for so long was standing in front of me. She was older than she had been in any of my dreams, her hair shorter, darker, but her eyes were the same. I knew her. Layla Miller, my mother.
"Hazel?" her eyes widened in disbelief. "Is that you?"
"It's me, mom!" I cried, pressing my hand against the glass, desperate to reach out to her.
Tears fell down her face, from the eyes that were an exact copy of mine. "I've been waiting years to hear your voice again."
"I've been searching for you," I told her. "I needed to know you."
"I'm so sorry that they took you, I should have fought harder!" she shook her head, memories coming back to her. "Do you have a good life honey?"
I thought about all the people in my life, the ones who would risk absolutely everything to fight for me.
"Yeah. I have a really good life," I answered honestly.
"Good," she smiled. Her smile prompted a memory that I couldn't make out. She reached for something in front of her. I saw too late that it was a gun.
