I woke up and my eyes widened to see myself surrounded by fire. It burned fiercely and brightly.
(Stillman must have brought me here...)
I looked around the blazing room to see a door. I crawled towards it before standing up outside the doorway. The smoke wasn't as low as it was in the room allowing me to stand without breathing difficulties. I ran down the stairs and reached the ground floor. There was only a hallway between me and freedom. I continued running but a voice stopped me. It was a young and fear filled voice of a female.
(Oh no, there's a child trapped somewhere!)
The fire isn't as bad as it could be making escape rather easy but I couldn't possibly leave knowing there was a child trapped somewhere in the building. The voice sounded like it came from above me. "Well here goes nothing...!" I ran back up the stairs of the blazing structure and called out to the child. I found her on the second floor but fire stood in her doorway.
(It couldn't be easy could it...)
"Don't worry, I'm coming!" I quickly jumped over the flames and luckily my clothes didn't catch fire although I sustained a few burns as I couldn't jump higher than the flames. "It's okay, I'll get you out somehow" The child ran into my arms crying.
"I was sleeping and when I woke up everyone was gone and there was fire!"
"I know you're scared but trust me. You'll be fine, I'll make sure of it. Can you trust me?" She nodded and I picked up a large blanket that was in the girl's room. I stood up with her in my arms and put the blanket over us. "Hold your breath and close your eyes for me?" She complied and I jumped back through her doorway. The blanket was to make sure we wouldn't get touched by the flames. "Okay open them. We've just gotta go down these staircases and we'll be out" I discarded the blanket and ran down the stairs but to our dismay, the ceiling had collapsed blocking the way down to the first floor.(There must be an emergency staircase!)
I was running through the floor's hallway when I heard sirens.
(Fire engines! Finally! They have those portable trampolines!)
I kicked down one of the apartment doors and ran towards a window. I put the child down and quickly opened it. I put my head out of the window and shouted to grab their attention. They came over with the trampoline and got into position.
(It's getting hard to breathe in here...I've got to hurry!)
I sat the girl on the windowsill. "You're going to have to jump but they'll catch you, okay?"
"I-I'm scared"
"It'll be alright, they won't let you fall. They're the professionals"
"Are you sure?"
"Positive"
"O-okay, I trust you..." She jumped and they caught her but before I could jump, the floor gave way and I fell onto the floor below.
"Ouch...that was unexpected..." I looked around to see the fire was much worse on this floor. Flames burned the walls, ceiling and floor. If it worsened any further, the building would most likely collapse. "I've got to get out of here...ow!" When I tried to stand up, pain ran through my ankle. I sank back down to the floor. "I must've sprained it when I fell...this just became a whole lot harder..." My crawling speed was greatly affected but that didn't stop the fire from growing faster and consuming the building. The smoke reached to the bottom of the room allowing the co2 to burn my throat and lungs and make my eyes water. I began coughing as I crawled. As I tried to escape the scarlet inferno, I heard something creak. I watched helplessly as the ceiling started to crack, the section that was about to collapse was right above me. I couldn't get away in time and closed my eyes out of reflex. "Argh...!!!" Pain and heat simultaneously assaulted my back. The section of ceiling that had fallen covered me. Only my head, shoulders and arms had escaped the burning rubble. I tried to push it off me but it was far too heavy for me to dislodge on my own.
