As the birds chirped perkily outside the window, my eyes slowly fluttered open before blinking a few times to allow my eyes to adjust to the blinding light.

I clenched my jaw and rubbed my eyes with the back of my head to chase the sleep away before leaning against the headboard, taking in my surroundings. I was shocked to find myself in my bed, dressed in the same clothes I had been wearing last night with my hair sitting on top of my head messily like a bird's nest.

I looked over to my nightstand, desperate to see the time but instead, my eyes were met with a pink sticky note.

I frowned and grabbed it before examining the messy, cursive handwriting.

You don't even look beautiful when you're asleep. You look like a dead monkey. By the way, I want my hoodie back.

-Ash

I couldn't help but chuckle before throwing the note to the side. I glanced over to the time and my eyes nearly popped out my sockets as I jumped out of bed quickly before rushing towards my en suite.

It said, 9:30 am.

I wasn't going to allow myself to get into further trouble because I knew my parents would want my head served on a silver platter if I did.

After I stumbled into the school and received a late note, I quickly rushed towards my locker and collected the binder I needed for the subject I would currently be in if I wasn't late.

"Miss Steele!" my AP Chemistry teacher, Miss Salinger, exclaimed in feigned surprise just as I stepped inside the classroom, everyone's head snapping in my direction. "How nice of you to join us!"

"How nice of you to join us," I mimicked her under my breath before I heard someone bark out a laugh from the back of the room.

My eyes drank in the room, half of the class looking bored and the other half of the class typing on their phones under their tables. As my eyes glazed over the room, two male figures sat at the back, holding in their laughs.

"Miss Steele, find a seat please."

I took a seat beside a boy who would steal glances at me under his big, round frames and brunette hair that flipped over his eyes like a curtain. I clenched my jaw and forced a smile on my face when his green eyes lit up in hope.

"H-h-hey-" he stuttered under his breath in an attempt to start a conversation. Inside, I wanted to sew his lips shut. "I'll j-just shut up n-now."

I gave him a curt nod before glancing over my shoulder to see Ashton eyeing me with his signature smirk painted on his face, his arms crossed over his chest.

I rolled my eyes and gave him the middle finger before turning my attention back on the board where Miss Salinger was explaining a powerpoint to us. I looked over to the boy who was chewing on his lips nervously, his eyes occasionally glancing over to me with a spark of hope hidden in it.

I sighed. "Did you need something?"

His green eyes slightly widened in surprise before wringing his hands together. "N-no."

I nodded slowly before raising an eyebrow at him. He let out a quiet, shaky chuckle before shrugging nervously.

"Do you want the notes that you missed? I mean, we can do it over lunch if you'd like and-" He was immediately cut off when a paper ball slammed into the back of his head. The boy flinched and quickly turned around, trying to find the culprit but when his eyes landed on a certain someone, he gulped and quickly averted his eyes away.

I turned around in my seat to see Landon stifling a laugh before doing a complicated handshake with Ashton. I sent them both a glare before smirking victoriously at them as Ashton sent me a confused look.

I turned back around in my seat and gave the boy the sweetest smile. I witnessed his cheeks flush pink as he adjusted his glasses on the bridge of his nose nervously. "I would love to. I'll meet you in the library."

His green eyes almost popped out of its socket before he nodded like he was the jack-in-the-box, clasping his hands together in excitement.

I scratched the back of my neck nervously and chuckled. "What's your name?"

A frown tugged at his lips but he only shrugged it off. "Calvin. And I know who you are, Luna."

I nodded in pride before glancing over my shoulder at Ashton who must've eavesdropped on our conversation. His expression was blank but I saw a spark of mischief in his blue eyes.

Time flew by pretty quickly and before I knew it, I had my textbook and notebook out in front of me whilst Calvin sat beside me, explaining a few things. My mind was elsewhere only because my group of friends, including Ashton and Landon, was snickering under their breaths from another table just ten feet away from us.

"Did you understand what I just said?" Calvin asked gently as if afraid I was going to explode.

I blinked and turned my attention on him, hurt and disappointment flickering in his green eyes. I clenched my jaw and forced a smile on my face. "Of course."

He nodded slowly as if contemplating whether to believe me or not. "I can see your friends are...a distraction over there."

I glanced over to their table and glared at them, causing them to only snicker again. I rubbed my temples and smiled weakly at Calvin who sent me a sympathetic smile.

I nearly punched him the face just to get rid of his sympathy.

"You know what," I said, rising from my seat as I plastered on a blank façade, causing Calvin to frown slightly, confused.

"Umm, what?"

I was about to open my mouth to speak when my phone went off. I frowned and took my phone out of my pocket before looking down at the no caller ID.

"What?" I questioned in the phone after picking up.

"Is this Miss Aurora Steele? Sister of Dakota Steele?" an unfamiliar voice questioned through the phone, her voice calm and smooth.

"Yes, who the hell are you?"

"I-I'm a nurse calling from the hospital. Your parents weren't able to pick up the phone so we thought we should try to reach you," she answered, ignoring the fact that I swore at her. My heart rate increased at the thought of Dakota getting hurt, her body lying on the hospital bed all bruised up. I clenched my jaw before taking a step back. "We need you to come to the hospital. ASAP."

"Miss Steele!" the librarian hissed as she placed her hands on her hips, her grey hair tied into a low bun. "Please put your phone away or else-"

"I'm on my way," I replied to the nurse, completely ignoring the old woman before ending the call immediately. I grabbed my jacket before bolting out the library doors without another word and I couldn't help but caught the worried glances from my girlfriends in the corner of my eyes.

Please don't be dead, Dakota.

I swear on Ashton's life, if you leave me in this cruel world alone, I was going to have you lying naked in your coffin.
