He sighed lowly to himself. "I love you too though"
"You don't..." I replied.
"Why don't you believe me?"
"Because you screamed it to me Jay, right after we conceived our daughter. I will never forget that...." I looked at him with tears pouring dow...
I went back to serving the rest of the customers at the counter and took in this one guy's order before I saw Jay finally lift up. He talked to his buddies for a few minutes but then got up and came to where I was working, sitting at one of my stools to watch me work.
"Have a nice day" I smiled, wiping off the area before I approached Jay. "Can I help you sir?" I asked in a dull tone.
"It's....Jay, not sir. So now you're going to act like you don't know me?"
"You just did over there, when I actually came over to see what you wanted" I folded my arms.
He looked around. "Look, I was just, embarrassed, and being surrounded by them fools over there wasn't making things any better. That's why I came over here.."
"Mm" I hummed nonchalantly.
"So um, how are you I guess?"
"Working obviously...." I avoided the question and picked up a note pad to finish writing a new poem of mine.
"I can see that you are.....indeed working" he said awkwardly, seeing that I was paying him no mind. "Look I just....wanted to come talk to you. And see your face since its been years since I've seen you. You're still beautiful by the way and I really like that look on you"
"Mhm..." I hummed again and still continued writing. ...I was really listening to him though, I was just being petty too😌
"Yeah but, I guess you're not interested in talking to me still. ...which really sucks but I can understand, you know. I know I hurt you but at least I've been trying my ass off to apologize. ....I miss you okay, so much. I think about you all day long and only you..."
I finally looked up from writing and met his eyes as they stared at me. I actually didn't think he would still miss me after all this time, I could've sworn he'd move on by now.
"Um excuse me, you mind if I can get a refill on this hon, I had a cherry coke" a customer asked, interrupting our little moment of silence.
I stood up from bending over and walked away, tending to this lady's cup like my job was supposed to. Upon replacing this woman's drink, I noticed Jay getting up and leaving the diner completely. I felt bad a little from just........, you know....walking away like that. It wasn't intentional though, damn.
But I guess he's done trying with me now....

"Are you sure you're not hungry?" I asked him.
"Mm Mm" he shook his head no.
"You and that tablet, little boy. I hope I won't get anymore calls about it distracting you in school" I warned him.
