"Today we have the Canadian Vine sensation, Shawn Mendes!" Ellen announced.
Shawn walked out with that shy smile of his, the crowd cheering as Ellen stood to greet him — the usual welcome for a rising star.
"Hey, Shawn."
"Hey, Ellen. How are you?"
"I'm good! Are you good?"
"Yeah."
"Good!"
The audience laughed. Maybe because it was awkward. Maybe because it was so Shawn — humble, sweet, and nervous.
He shifted in his seat, fidgeting with the hem of his sleeve. No matter how many interviews he did, no matter how big the stage, the fame never really changed him. He'd always be that same boy who posted a Vine for fun — with me beside him, laughing at how off-key we were.
"So today marks three years since you and your best friend posted that first Vine," Ellen said with a smile.
"Yeah, it's crazy it's been that long," Shawn said, smiling wide.
"So, you and Nina Fence — best friends since kindergarten — posted a singing cover on Vine, and look at you now! Both of you have number-one songs, have been on TV shows, and even gone on your own tours. You two have become total superstars."
The audience erupted into cheers before Ellen could even finish.
"Yeah, it's been incredible. We're both really grateful for everything," Shawn said, his voice soft but sincere.
"Is it hard, though?" Ellen asked. "The constant fame?"
"Yes and no," he admitted. "I love my fans — meeting them, connecting through music, all of it. But it's hard not seeing family and friends as much."
"How often do you and Nina see each other?"
"Hardly ever," Shawn said quietly. "That's what sucks the most. I really miss her. She's like family. We still call each other, though — we even help each other with song lyrics."
"You help write each other's songs?" Ellen asked, smiling.
"Yeah," he said, nodding. "It keeps us close, even when we're far apart."
Ellen's smile softened. "Shawn actually tried to get Nina here today to surprise you, but it was impossible with her schedule. So we're sorry we couldn't make that happen."
Shawn's expression faltered for just a second before he forced a smile. "It's okay," he said quietly.

Later, after the show, Shawn walked out to the back lot and pulled out his phone.
"Hey," Nina's voice came through the line, warm and familiar. "Just saw you on Ellen."
"Yeah," Shawn said, exhaling. "It was alright."
"I'm so sorry I couldn't make it. I've got a concert in less than two hours. I'm actually at rehearsal right now, but I had to watch. Break time well spent, right?"
"I get it," he said. "I've got the same problems. Remember?"
"Of course," she said softly.
There was a small pause — the kind that feels heavy but comfortable all at once.
"I really miss you," he said.
"I miss you too. If only our tours could line up somehow — just so we could see each other, even for a few hours."
"Yeah," he said quietly. "That'd be nice."
"Sorry, Shawn, I've gotta go. Break time's over."
"Love you."
"Love you too, Mendes. We'll figure it out, okay?"
"Okay."
The line clicked off. Shawn stood there for a moment, phone in hand, staring out at the tour buses lined up under the streetlights.
"Ready?" Andy called from behind him.
Shawn took a breath, slipping his phone into his pocket. "Yeah," he said softly. "Where to next?"
