Hours had passed, and I still couldn't sleep. I'd poured everything into this song, yet she didn't know it was about her.
Grade 6 — our second-last year of elementary school — that's when Kristin moved here. The teacher paired us up, thinking I was one of those "outgoing, nice boys" she needed. And somehow, he was right.
We'd been connected ever since.
Now, years later, I was on tour. She was at home, trying to process her parents' divorce. I knew she needed me, but I couldn't be there. Not yet.
She knew I had feelings for her — I told her back in grade 11. I even kept asking until she finally said yes to going to prom with me.
This song had always been about her. But now... it meant so much more.
I grabbed my phone and texted her.

Kristin: How so?
Shawn: If you need me, I'd give this all up — the shows, the travel, everything — just tell me. You're so important to me, and I need you to know that ❤️
Kristin: I do know that. But please don't give everything up for me.
Shawn: You are everything.
Kristin: ...I wish you could just tour around town. Then we'd both have what we want.
Shawn: And what is it you want?
Kristin: Shawn, I think it's pretty clear.
Shawn: It is, but if you say it, it'll make it better.
Kristin: Dork.
Shawn: Waiting...
Kristin: Okay, fine. You're my best friend, and you already know this... But I've had feelings for you too. Not as long as you've had them for me, but— When you told me, I freaked out a little. I didn't want our friendship to change. But it did. And now I love you, Shawn. I miss you. I wish you were here. But please—don't give up your dream for me, okay? Promise me you won't.

Kristin: Okay... but don't come back right now. I'm okay.
Shawn: Deal. I just needed you to know you're not alone. I'm here for you. I love you.
