Chapter 10 It Can't Be True

Peeta POV

I open my eyes and feel hot. I sit up and take my shirt off. Its middle summer and really hot. Night and day. Katniss is still sleeping so I quietly get out of bed and tip toe downstairs. Juditha is sitting on the couch watching cartoons. Tom and Jerry, her favorite. I sit down next to her and kiss her forehead. 

"Daddy, can we go swimming today?" she asks. Katniss and I take her swimming all the time but I always stay on the beach. Well, we go to a lake that only we know of. I nod just as Katniss comes down. "Mommy, daddy said we can go swimming today."

 "Really, well. That sounds like a great idea." she says sitting down. I kiss her cheek but she pulls me in for a long kiss. Juditha has never had any problems with us kissing. "Than lets eat breakfest than go swimming." she says standing up. I make breakfest and we enjoy. We pack a picnic and some extra clothes than we go to the lake. Katniss and Juditha change and Juditha jumps into the cool water. Katniss stands at the edge of the lake.

"You change and I'll......Peeta!" she yells as I push her into the lake. She climbs out and tries to push me in but I'm to big. "Come on Peeta. You never go swimming with us." I sit down and look away.

"Thats because I can't swim." I say. She looks at me with big eyes. 

"How come? Didn't you ever go swimming with your father or brother's?" she asks but I shake my head.

"We never had time. Always busy at the bakery." I say but she smiles and takes my hand.

"I'll teach you." she says leading me to the water. I'm gonna be honest. I'm kinda scared. We step into the water. After about an hour I knew the simple stroke so I could swim with Juditha. We had our picnic than relaxed on the sand.

"Daddy, can Ryan stay over night today?" Juditha asks. I sit up and think. I'm not really up for the idea of a boy staying over night with my daughter.

"Yes sweetie. Just ask his parents first." Katniss says before I can say anything. She smiles at me. Her phone rings and she picks up. Her face changes from happy to scared.

"Peeta, we have to go to the hostpital. My mom was in a car crash." she says. We all jump up, pack our stuff together and rush to the car. I drive to the hostpital and we run inside.

"We're here for Shelby Abernathy." Katniss says out of breath. She tell us what room and we rush to it but Haymitch won't let us in.

"Listen, the crash was worse than they thought." he says making Katniss cry even more. Jay was sitting on a waiting chair with his arm in a sling. Just than a doctor walks up.

"I have very bad news. Mrs. Abernathy's condition is worse than we thought and she will not make it." Katniss, Jay and Haymitch all together break down in tears. Katniss wraps her arms tightly around me and cried into my shirt.

"You all can see her once more before we turn life support off." he says before leaving. We enter the room and see Shelby, laying there motionless. Katniss and Jay rushed to her and embraced her. Haymitch soon after did the same aswell Juditha and I. We all say our goodbyes and they shut life support off and we leave the hostpital. I drive us home and we walk inside. Juditha runs crying upstairs but Katniss just sits down and doesn't move. I sit down next to her.

"Katniss, I know....I know it'll be hard but we can get through this, I promise." I say but it doesn't help. I take her upstairs and lay her into bed. I decide to check on Juditha. I open the door ans see her crying.

"Hey, its okay. grandma's okay. She's fine." I say calmly.

"I know I'm just worid about mommy." she says. I know she's right. I'm worrid about Katniss aswell.

"She'll be okay. Just try to get some sleep."I say give her a kiss and leaving. I walk back to hear more crying. Katniss. I lay down next to her and kiss her cheek.

"Katniss please. It'll be okay. Your mother is with your father and little sister. She's happy. She wouldn't want to be like this. She would want you to live your life." I say.

"It can't be true." she whispers. I hold her closer and close my eyes. I'm sure with some time she'll be fine.
