Mystic Falls - 1864

"Damon, please..." I began softly. His hand gripping mine in a desperate, silent plea to stay. I had to run. If I stayed, my death was a certainty.
"You don't have to leave, we'll think of something..." he begged, his blue eyes shining with unshed tears. "...anything".

I drew in a shaky breath, before letting it out slowly, my eyes brimming with my own tears as they viewed this place for the very last time. The moonlight reflected off the water, giving the surrounding trees a luminescent shimmer. The sky was clear, with glowing stars flung across a tapestry of darkness. My eyes settled on the man infront of me, we were knelt face to face on the dirty bank, The Falls cascading behind us. I didn't care that my dress was getting dirty.
"She's here, which means I have to leave or..." my voice was shaking slightly as it trailed off. The unfairness of the entire situation was incomprehensible. I was an original vampire. My brother - Niklaus - was hellbent on pursuing the Doppelgänger who got away all those years ago, the one whom I helped to escape. And now, she was here. Meaning my brother would soon follow to claim his revenge. Just when I was getting used to being back here...

I had spent months as a silent, invisible inhabitant of this Town, I had to come back. I always do. This was home. Nobody knew I was here, suspicion was high enough in this town and I wasn't one to add to this hysteria. That was until I met Damon in the woods one night. I had intended to feed on him, then make him forget, as was my cyclical routine of feeding. Yet, he was never afraid of me... He surprised me. We talked until the sun came up and we had been meeting in secret ever since.

"Grace, whatever it is you're afraid of, we can fight it together..." Damon began, his voice carrying as much pain as my own. "... please, just... don't leave, not now".
Half in anguish, half in amusement and with a hint of pride, I sighed. This human was willing to stand up for me, against the unknown. I hadn't had someones devoted support like this in in centuries.
"We can't, Damon... I'm sorry".

My tears finally spilled over, I reluctantly pulled my hand away from his, before he gently cupped my face and wiped my tears away with his thumb.

Damon looked down, his eyes stung as he blinked hard, willing himself not to cry to no avail. He had to say it. Atleast once, before it's too late.

"I love you, Grace".

At this, I stiffened, everything coming to a halt. When you live as long as I have, 'love' is a surprisingly rare occurrence, something that many would have given up on. Yet, as I looked into the eyes of the man in front of me - his innocence, hope and fear was laid bare.
"And I love you... Always and forever, Damon" I answered, relaying the promise of my family, the one that I lost in 1492, over 370 years ago.

"And... I'm sorry".

He glances at me quizzically - His brows shifting and his mouth opening to object - before I cup his face with my hands and lock eyes with him.
"You will not remember any of this, you will forget about me, Damon. Forget about everything that I have told you, how I feel about you and you will move on and be happy..." I had so much to say and tell him, yet dragging this out was paining my heart, my voice was breaking the more I spoke. I decided to leave it at that.

"I will forget about you, move on and be happy" Damon responded in a monotone voice, before closing his eyes, signalling to me that the compulsion had worked. He looked so... peaceful. It's what he deserves. Maybe it would be better this way. He is human after all, he will grow old and die. I cannot be selfish. I cannot rob him of a human life and place my own curse upon him. Peace is what he deserves.

I shuddered, tears freely falling as kissed him for the last time. As I withdrew, I brought my hands away from his face, before standing up shakily.
"Goodbye, Damon" I said, barely above a whisper, before disappearing into the night.

Little did I know, the very next morning a wagon and horse would pull up at the Salvatore Mansion, with none other than Katerina Petrova inside. Thus, Entwining Damon (As well as his brother) into the Supernatural world that I had made him forget.
