Fatherhood for assassins

"Nazir, can you take care of Blaise while I go and complete this contract."

Why did I trust him? You tell me.

One day I was foolish enough to leave my precious child in the care of Nazir. Why did I let him do this? I don't know. Did I have time to think it over? No, I didn't. So I rushed out of the sanctuary and left him to deal with Blaise.

Nazir and I had a sort of strange relationship. Yes, we were dating, and we both wanted to take it to the next level, we just weren't sure how to do that. As assassins we never thought about love and life and that sappy stuff, not until we started dating... Okay well we didn't start off dating, it was more like casual sex at first, but after a few months we became serious about each other. And then, once I rescued him from the burning hell that was our previous sanctuary, we realised how much we really cared for one another. That was around the time I started letting my kid into the new sanctuary and making it my resident home, and was also he time I started to think about marriage.

Yes, again, we are assassins, but that doesn't make our feelings any less valid. And sure we have homicidal tendencies, but if I was able to raise a kid then I could surely commit to Nazir. Right?

These thoughts raced through my mind as I waited for the target to pass me by.

The target was your average snobby citizen, I was given some dirt on him and a contract by a corrupt soldier in Dragonsbridge so I was here to take him down. As I pulled back my bow I had another thought.

What if he's teaching Blaise how to kill?

And another.

I don't want him learning things like that yet.

And another.

Oh! What if my baby get's hurt!?

I drew the bow back to the very limit.

I need to get back home, now.

I let the arrow fly, and as it pierced the back of the targets throat I was already running at full speed out of the city and back to Dawnstar.

As I bounded over the hills, and raced through the fields and snow, I was clouded by thoughts of Nazir putting my boy through trials to be an assassin. What if he introduces him to the victims in the torture chamber! Oh Gods, the thought of my precious boy beating people to death! I couldn't let that happen!

Another hop skip and a jump away and I was at the door of the sanctuary.

"What is life's greatest illusion?"

"Innocence brother."

"You are not worthy."

"What?" I stood there for a while, completely in shock as the answer processed.

Not worthy? Not worthy my arse!

I banged on the door, furious with the response, when I heard a giggle from the other side.

"BABETTE!" I yelled, face pressed up against the door. "Let me in."

"Babette isn't here."

"So help me Babette I will tell mother."

"You're no fun Listener." She sighed, conceding.

I sprinted down the main chamber and jumped the stairs only to be met with the most adorable scene I had ever witnessed on my life.

"And are you sure you want this book?" Nazir asked as he bent down before my son. Blaise nodded. "Then I guess I will just have to put up with it huh?" Blaise smiled and ran off into the direction of the bedrooms.

Nazir sighed heavily and stood up. "I'm not going to enjoy this."

"Why?" I asked, making him turn to face me. "You looked like you were enjoying yourself a few seconds ago."

"Don't mistake my kindness for joy [Y/N]." He headed over to me. "I am only doing this for you."

"Yeah right." I chuckled. "You're a big softie." I hugged him. "Thanks Nazir."

"For what?"

"Not killing him, or teaching him about what we do yet."

"Of course, he's only young."

"He could do with a father like you."

"I thought he already had one?"

I looked up in confusion. "What? Who?"

"Me, you ninny."

"Ah, well then I can't argue with confidence like that can I?"

I kissed his cheek and he set off for the bedroom.

"All I have to get through is reading riddle books for a few more years."
