Bill looked down at me from his perch on the roof.

"Bill, how'd you get up there?" I yelled up at him.

"Hey, Pinetree, you know what today is, right? It's a human tradition."

He brought his hand up, and snapped. Suddenly I was sitting on the roof with him.

Really really close.

I blushed and scooted away.

"I...I don't know. It's probably something I forgot about."

"You know, Pinetree, I heard about a human tradition on this holiday made up based on the man made concept of time. Apparently, there'll be fireworks coming from that direction," Bill stretched out his arm, and pointed towards a local park beyond the tree line.

"Fireworks...? It's New Years...?" I remembered.

"It's New Years! Bill! I forgot completely. How did you know?"

"Your sister had it marked on that pink glitter cat unicorn calendar of hers."

"Ah, that makes sense."

We sat there in silence a few minutes more.

I stood up carefully.

"Well, I should probably get some sleep, seeing as tomorrow-"

"Wait."

Bill grabbed my shirt carefully.

"Sit with me a little longer? It's almost time."

He looked up at me with his golden eyes, showing an irresistible expression.

Puppy dog eyes.

"Oh...okay. I'm really tired, though."

"I'll let you sleep in a bit. Don't worry, I'll protect you from nightmares."

"S-so kind of you," I stammered, nervous.

He pulled me closer, and suddenly a blanket covered both of us perfectly.

"So, Pinetree, I heard of this human tradition around this holiday," Bill started.

"If it's the wine, then we're not physically old enough by human laws."

"No, not the wine. Although that would be fun."

Bill checked a pocket watch.

"Count down with me, Pinetree."

I felt stupid, but looked at his watch and counted anyways.

"Five."

"Four."

"Three."

"Two."

"One."

Fireworks went off in the nearby park.

Bill pulled me closer, and in that second, kissed me.

I obviously kissed back.

When he pulled away, I was blushing, flustered mess.

Bill hugged me, and whispered in my ear.

"Happy New Years, Mason."

I blushed harder, his voice saying my name sounded...perfect.
