"Every Breath You Take"

*********
To be honest, I really didn't know where to start. The last time I saw Mai was at a market three years ago, when she shot me. I suppose my first look should be at that town then; maybe, just maybe, she's been a good girl and stayed put, waiting for me to come get her.
It took several days to drive there and on the way, I began to see more and more cop cars on the prowl, my guess, looking for me.
When I made it to the town, a light bulb turned on in my head when I saw the police station. That annoying rat Jace, is an officer of the law, so, this must be where he works, or worked.
I knew going inside would be risky; if my face hasn't already been on every policemen's email, I might just be able to get what I want. But, just in case, I took the revolver that Dr. Jung kept in his glove box and stuffed it between my shirt and the back of my pants. I fixed my hair and put on my innocent face, the one Mai fell for originally.
The bell above the station's door rang as I stepped inside. A young woman sat at the front desk, admiring herself in a small handheld mirror. She noticed my presence and quickly sat up straight; my guard uniform must of made her think I was of higher rank or something.
"Hello sir, what can I do for you?" She asked in an almost rhetorical way.
"I'm looking for officer Jace Lee."
"Oh, he doesn't work for this station anymore, he moved to the station a few hours from here with his girlfriend." She said, smacking her gum between every word.
Dammit! There has to be something else here that can help me. I looked back at the girl who was obviously swooning over me, how revolting.
"Where do you keep residential information?"
"Oh um, I'm not suppose to tell anyone-"
"Listen, sweetheart, I'm sure you value your job, right? And if we're being honest, I am not in the mood to argue, so unless you want me to tell your boss about this, I suggest you take me to the damn files."
I swear I could see her soul flying from her body. She blinked widely a few times then gulped.
"Th-they're that way." Her shaky finger pointing to a back room.
"Thanks." I winked, leaving her scared yet attracted of me.
The room was filled with rows of cabinets, all alphabetically organised by last name. Instead of searching for Jace's folder, I had a slight inkling that there might be one for Mai, given that she was a resident here for a year.
I pulled the 'Y' drawer open and began flipping through all the folders until the most beautiful name appeared: Yung, Mai.
"Everyone has a file, isn't that right, Doc?" I smirked, pulling Mai's file from the cabinet.
Her stunning photograph, along with fingerprints and other personal information, hid inside. I lifted through her papers until I saw her locations, allowing me to know exactly where she is.
"This is just too easy." I laughed, caressing her picture for a few moments until placing the file back into the drawer and leaving.
The woman at the desk was still baffled by what I said earlier, so I went up to her.
"Let's forget this even happened, you get to keep your job and I get the information I came for, what do you say? It can be our little secret."
"Su-sure." She stuttered with relief on her face.
"Good." I smiled slyly and left the station.
"Don't worry, Mai, I'm coming for you, darling." I murmured and drove off.
Mai POV
"We'll be leaving for my parent's house tomorrow morning." Jace said, placing the last of our luggage by the front door.
I stood by the window, looking out of our small little apartment and at the city below me. This sucked! We had just got engaged and now our lives are being terrorized yet again by the same person.
"You okay?" Jace asked worriedly, placing his hand on my crossed arms.
"I'm sorry I did this to you." I muttered.
"What do you mean?"
"It's all my fault. I'm the one he wants. You could be married to a normal girl and have a normal family with a normal life if I hadn't run into that police station that night. You deserve better than me-"
"Stop! Don't say that." He cupped my sorrowful face in his warm hands. "This isn't your fault at all; you never asked for this to happen to you. And as far as a 'normal life' goes, I don't want it. The only kind of life I want is the one with you in it, got that?"
He wiped a tear off my cheek then pulled me into a hug. I placed my head on his chest, surrounding myself with his warmth and heartbeat.
"I'm scared, Jace." I mumbled.
"I know, but we'll get through this, together." He assured, hugging tighter.
Later that night, Jace had an emergency police call which forced him to leave for god knows how many hours. Before he left, he called a cab for me, telling me to leave early to his parent's and that he'd see me there later tomorrow.
"I love you." I said to Jace as the cab driver put the last of the suitcases in the trunk.
"I love you too, Mai." Jace responded with a sad expression. He caressed my face for a moment then led me to the rear door. "I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"
"Promise?"
"Promise."
And with that, the cab drove off as I watched Jace become smaller and smaller from the back window.
The drive to Jace's parent's house was long and boring. The snow outside didn't help either, making the driver only go 45mph the entire time. It was dark and we were in the middle of nowhere which made looking out the window for any kind of fun a complete fail. I decided a book would pass the time and grabbed the science fiction novel Jace got me for my birthday. I didn't even realize we were about to drive past an intersection, I mean, why would I? But suddenly, a pair of bright lights beamed from the crossing street and through the windows of the cab before smashing into the side of it. The impact caused the cab to flip and tumble down the side of the hill.
The windows shattered, leaving shards of glass to fling across the inside of the cab, plenty of them either scratching or getting stabbed into my face and arms. I could feel my butt lift from the seat as the car went airborne between each tumble. Everything felt like it was in slow motion: my breathing, my heartbeat, the miscellaneous objects that I had laying next to me before the crash; it felt like the spinning and thumping of the vehicle hitting against the ground and trees would never end. Until finally, everything stopped. The car had landed upside down at the very bottom of the hill.
It took me awhile to grasp the situation; that car just- just came out of no where and- and the driver- the driver!
I unbuckled my seat belt with my scrapped and bloody arms, my body flopping onto the roof of the car. I pulled myself to the middle seat, trying to see if the driver was okay, but I was horribly wrong. The driver was entirely doused in blood and glass and a windshield wiper stuck out from his skull.
"Oh God- Oh my God-" I mumbled as I crawled to the bent-open door, pulling myself from the wreckage.
When I finally was able to drag my weak body out of the car, I saw a black figure walking towards me, the snow making it hard to put together.
"He- help-" I tried speaking, but before I could force anything out of my dry throat, a large fist struck me across the head, forcing everything to go black.
