The Walkers had been in Arizona for the past few weeks and it was still early August. Everything about Stevie and Robert's plan worked out and things were going smoothly for everyone. Stevie managed to pull strings to get her daughter a vacation and Shannon had no doubt her mom could do it.
Shannon was happy to be in Arizona, to get away from her life in California she was really starting to get motivated for her future and that could not have made her mother happier. Leaving Lindsey in California was also a relief for her. She'd been with him a few weeks, but the get away was still good for her. Her grandfather was being very encouraging, just like Stevie and it was easy to tell where her mother got it from. But he told her how to get started in whatever she wanted to do.
Jeffrey was more than excited to spend time with his grandparents, especially since he didn't see them and they were happy he was well and safe. Like Stevie, Barbara was upset about his profession of choosing, but if there was nothing Stevie could do, there was definitely nothing Barbara could do. So both women had to just ride along with his mind set. Jess was really proud and he thought what his grandson was doing, was great. He of course took everything into consideration and he would worry, like the rest of the family, but he had warmed to the idea easier.
Nicholas was having a great time and he loved every minute spent in Arizona. He had friends to hang out with during the summer and he had something to do all the time. Jess took his grandsons out to do things because, he was all about the outdoors.
Stevie and Robert's days were filled with the same things. There wasn't much difference between the homes they had. One was just significantly hotter than the other. Their home wasn't too far from Jess and Barbara's so the kids coming back and forth wasn't an issue. Robert was basically on a vacation and Stevie was just resting and vegetating for when she had to start her tour, which was a few months away, but she knew it was going to be exhausting.
Things were going pretty well between Stevie and her husband, though Shannon continued to be standoffish with her father.
"Hey, mom?" Shannon asked coming into the living room.
"Yes?" Stevie replied, setting her journal down.
"I'm gonna try to get my driver's license," she said with nothing to follow. She just wanted to let her mom know.
"Good," her mother responded. "I mean, you know how to drive and I trust that you won't get it taken away again."
Shannon nodded. "It's been three years," she added. She had gotten speeding tickets and DUIs and that ended in her getting her license suspended. She had never gotten in trouble with one of her parents' cars, but it had always been one of her friends' cars. Even though she would drink and smoke all the time, she was always more cautious than her friends who would be passed out in the back. She was a fast driver and she was always careful, but there were those times when a cop caught her for not only speeding, but she would never drug test, clean.
"That's good, you're a little over due. You should be able to get it. And that would make it easier on you, instead of walking everywhere," her mother assured.
"Yeah, it was for only two years. I'm gonna try to get a car too. I've been saving for things like that."
"Glad to hear that," she assured. "If you need help, we will help. Where do you wanna get the car?"
"I have a friend who sells cars back home. Maybe he can get me a fixer upper one and I was thinking uncle Chris can fix it."
"Sounds good to me," Stevie assured and then paused. "Where does he get the cars to sell?" She was concerned the cars were stolen or something.
