Here's Miaden's song for the chapter: "Ultimately" · Khai Dreams

So let me get this straight. He actually thinks I'm gonna open the door for him? I try not to laugh.

That's what I think at first, until five minutes later I still don't hear anything else from him. What if something happened? What if he's dying on my patio right now? I read the text again. Open your back door. A chill runs down my spine. What if those were his last words?

But then again. I glare at my bedroom door. The most likely scenario is that he just came to yell at me for hanging up on him. Please. He can argue with himself. I nod, crossing my arms. I'm just gonna sit right here, thank you very much. Yup... I'm just gonna sit here...

I peek at my phone again.

I try not to panic. He's just being stubborn, right? Right?

Another minute passes. I hop out of bed, running to my door. Don't worry, Aiden. I'm coming—

BUZZ BUZZ

I collapse against the wall, holding my heart. Thank god. I pick up the phone, but my face falls. It's not Aiden calling. It's... "Bri?" I look at the phone. "Is everything alright?"

"I said open your back door."

AIden's cold voice fills my ears. He sounds perfectly fine, other than his bad attitude. I cock my head back. Seriously? Now he's using her phone to bother me?

"Wait!" Brittany says just before I hang up. She sounds so tired. "Just let him in, please. He's been out here forever trying to—"

The phone cuts off.

I raise an eyebrow, trying to weigh my options. I could be the bigger person and hear what he has to say. Or I could be petty.

I rub my chin, liking the sound of number two. I do deserve to be petty, and, besides, he's probably already left by now. So I'd just look stupid opening the door for someone who isn't there.

Yup.

I should just ignore him, but... I'm already standing up. My eyes shift to the empty glass of water.

I might as well put that in the sink—which just so happens to be by the back door. I'm not gonna open the back door though. I'm just gonna put this glass away. I quietly make my way down each step.

When I get to the kitchen, I decide I have no choice but to wash the glass. It's the only thing in the sink, so I slowly lather it up. Then I look at the back door. I rinse the cup off. I look at the back door. I put the cup on the rack. I look at the back door, staring at the knob.

He's definitely gone by now, right? There's no point in looking. He's gone. He's gone. He's gone.

I head towards the stairs. Somewhere in between stepping over a lego and reaching to turn the lights off, I relent. Fine. I'll see if he's there. Fine. I'll be the bigger person—thank god one of us can be.

I open the back door, glaring into the darkness. "Aiden?"

It's pitch black. Leaves rustle somewhere. I take a step back. They rustle again. Even though my eyes are starting to adjust to the darkness, everything in me tells me to shut the door. I listen.

"Wait," I hear just before it closes.

It's Krys' voice. I peek through the crack.

She's at the edge of the trees, pointing somewhere in my general direction. I raise an eyebrow. What is she...
