As shocking as the news was, to everyone who had heard of what happened, there was nothing that anyone could do to reverse the wave of sadness which washed over everyone who was affected by the news.

After all, L was dead.

Now L needed his successor to fly to Japan, thousands of miles away from the grey and dull land of England, in order for them to finish the case which he started.

Unfortunately, that successor happened to be a person who was most dear to your little old self at the time. Your best friend Near, who was the top student at Whammy's Orphanage for incredibly gifted children. L was no normal detective, and the children at the place you called a home were no exception. Everyone at Whammy's had unique abilities unlike normal children at your age. By unique abilities I refer to the extreme levels of intelligence every child contained and presented. Near was the number one student when it came down to academic skills and intelligence, and to you he was your number one friend. So it wasn't easy when he had told you the news on how he would be flying out to Japan in the morning tomorrow, much to your shock.

"Do you really have to go?" You asked, finding it painful to speak, your throat lodged with sobs which wanted to be released as you tried your best to hold back the tsunami of tears which threatened to spill.

"I'm sorry Y/A but as L has passed I must go to Japan and solve the case in his place" Near replied in his usual tone of voice, back turned to you as he packed his bags. You could see from over his shoulder that it wasn't much that he chose to pack, just several pairs of pyjamas, puzzles and other necessities he would need whilst he was out of the country. One of those items being a picture frame whic contained the image of the two of you, your arm over his shoulder and holding out a peace sign. On the other hand Near seemed to shrink next to you, hands occupied with one of the many toy robots he had and his gaze fixed on the ground, seemingly shy when the camera was pointed at him.

You were quiet for a couple of moments, the only sounds heard being the short sniffling noises you made.
"I..I'll miss you" you mumbled, and Near seemed to freeze once he heard your voice crack the littlest of bits. He packed away one more item before turning around, his usual blank expression morphing into one of surprise for a split second, seeing your tinted nose and glossy eyes.

There was a string within him which snapped the moment he saw the look of melancholy on your face. It was an expression he wasn't quite used to seeing, especially since you were probably the most positive person out of all of the kids which stayed at the orphanage. It almost...hurt him. To see you so upset. Then to make himself feel even worse, he realised he wasn't quite sure on how to make you feel better. Emotions were probably the only subject Near would seemed to struggle understanding and expressing himself, but it didn't take him or any other genius to figure out that you were upset, and he felt upset seeing you so upset.

Despite that though, he racked his thoughts together and came to a conclusion on how to comfort you, or what he hoped would comfort you. Not wanting to look at him any longer you turned your back to him, rubbing at your eyes furiously to try and make the tears vanish before they could fall. The moment you turned around though, you could feel a pair of arms wrapping themselves around your waist and a slight force against your back. A couple more sniffles escaped you and before you could register what had happened, Near rested his chin on your shoulder, hugging in you in a comforting manner.

Near wasn't a hugger, and it was always you who initiated the hug, so when you felt his body warmth against you, the tears you tried so hard to hold back, finally fell. You were going to miss him so much, he was a very special person to you, and honestly you hated to even imagine what your world would be like without him. Turning around, still being held in his arms, you enveloped Near with a hug just as tight as the one he was giving you. Leaving no space between the both of your bodies as you buried your face into his shoulder, feeling his hand trace little circles into your back soothingly.
