The world hated you, and so, you ignored the world. Life had become a blur in which you only made through enough to pass as if living.

But it was hard.

It was always hard even before, but now you were lost in the negatives and hate to the point of lifelessness. How could human kind be this... terrible?

What separates us from the animals is our humanity, yet the people you encountered on your day to day basis ignored every ounce of this.

You didn't know whose fault it was really. Hers? His? Yours?

Unknown.

But you couldn't bring yourself to stop hoping, stop dreaming, and stop wishing. Wishing that one day someone would be there standing with you amongst the terror to face it with you and make it all OK.

At one point, you thought he was that someone.

But you were so wrong.

"Umm, hi," a voice quietly spoke out, causing you to snap your head up from your book abruptly. The sound of a voice that wasn't a jeering one was foreign and... surprising.

"Hi?" You questioned wearily, as if it were a question.

He laughed lightly and your eyes widened at the sound of happiness that emitted from his mouth. You were shocked.

"I'm new here, do you think you could help me out?"

You were so surprised that you gasped. He looked at you questioningly, causing your head to fall in embarrassment as to avoid this stare.

"Umm, are you sure you want my help?" You questioned, still untrusting.

"Sure. You look nice."

You felt your face redden and heart start thumping against your chest. What was this?

"What's your name?" The handsome and kind guy asked, holding his hand out for you to grasp in yours.

"(Y/N)," You heard yourself reply. Your mouth went dry upon touching his hand and making contact.

"Cool. I'm Vince."

His voice was deep and friendly. Breaking his hand away, he began asking you questions about the school and the locations of classrooms and what not.

The two of you walked together and you did your best to help him out. Soon you found yourself easing up in his presence and even laughed a little.

Your happiness of course was cut short by a random guy running past and hissing an insult into your ear. You hung your head in shame as Vince glared at the guy.

"Why would he insult you like that? If he ever does that again, just tell him off," he informed you.

"It's not that simple."

"Then I'll make it that simple. If anyone makes fun of you or hurts you, come get me and I'll take care of them."

You were stunned. Never had you ever heard someone talk to you like this. Unknowingly, your young foolish self gave a bit of your heart away that day.

~~~
"Vince? " you questioned a month later, trying to see if he was focused on your words, "Did you hear what I said?"
He only hummed in response, his mind and eyes focused elsewhere.
The two of you had become fast friends and you were extremely appreciative of him for being the first person to approach you kindly in the school. Like any other girl would do in such a situation, cursed by your own frail heart, you had admittedly developed feelings for him, but wasn't sure how to approach the matter. Unfortunately, for the past week, Vince hadn't really been talking to you much and seemed extremely out of it. You hoped he wasn't sick.
