The Monte Cristo Homestead belongs to Reg and Olive Ryan. They welcomed the Australian Ghost Hunters Society to stay with them in the old house. In April 1999 they organized a group of fellow ghost hunters to accompany them to inspect the haunted homestead for the weekend. None of them knew what to expect as it was one of the first times the house had ever been investigated by ghost hunters.

HISTORY:

The homestead was built in 1884 by Christopher William Crawley. He built the house for himself, wife and children. He built the house on the hill overlooking Junee so he could happily enjoy the view of the township at the time from his top balcony. He was born in Sydney in1841 and died at Monte Cristo Homestead on 14 December 1910 at the age of 69. The cause of death was heart failure brought on by an infected blister on his neck caused by the rubbing of his starched collars. The graves of Mr. and Mrs. Crawley and their daughter who died in an accident at an early age can be seen at the local Junee cemetery.

HAUNTINGS:

This is what happened at the homestead:

What was then known as the Australian Ghost Hunters Society (AGHS) and is now COSPER (Castle of Spirits Paranormal and Entity Research Group), visited Monte Cristo for a light research and Paranormal meet for interested parties on 9, 10 and 11 April 1999. They took the opportunity to enjoy Reg and Olive Ryan's warm and welcoming hospitality as well as listen to the many ghost stories of Monte Cristo that Reg could share with them.

The equipment they used were 800 asa film, Digital cameras, EMF meters, plenty of batteries and torches, thermometers, a cassette recorder with an amplified microphone.

Here follows a report on the events:

DAY 1 FRIDAY:

The arrival date for the group was Friday. Five members arrived on Friday while some of the other members arrived on Saturday. Most of the investigating were underway on Saturday.

DAY 2 SATURDAY:

By this time two of the younger female members of the group, who were booked in etc had taken flight early the morning without notice. Apparently they were spooked by dogs unexpectedly barking abnormally and howling mysteriously at their lodging in the local pub. The homestead is breathtakingly beautiful.

Tucked behind the luscious velvet drapes in the front entrance is the steep old staircase where the ghostly voices of children have been heard, and where tourists often have dire and uncomfortable feelings. Children of today quite often react with abrupt asthma attacks and overpowering emotions when near or on the staircase. It is believed that one of the Crawley's children was unintentionally dropped down the staircase at an early age and died. It is also widely believed that other may have met with a fatal accident in this area as the stairs are steep and a hazard for any young child.
