Wait a Minute
“Aunty it’s our turn.”
I looked away from him and turned back to the food that was being rung up. I made sure I didn’t turn back around as I paid for our things and we walked out of the store. Cameron was talking about something but I couldn’t focus on what she said because all my mind could wrap around was seeing Avery again.
I hadn’t seen him since graduation but I knew he was doing well because he had been drafted to play for the Eagles. I wasn’t a sports type person so I didn’t have to see him on TV. The one thing that kept playing over in my head that I couldn’t figure out was that little girl. I wouldn’t have guessed that he had a child, but she was living proof.
“Cam go ahead and put the bread on the front seat.”
She took the bread from me and went to set it in the car when I heard a voice from behind me and it took everything in me not to ignore it and finish putting my things in the car. “Jordy! Oh My God! How are you?”
Cameron came back from around the truck and stood next to me right as Lauryn walked up with Avery beside her. That’s when everything clicked. The baby turned out to be his and now they were together. I couldn’t believe it but lately with how things had been in my life stuff like this didn’t amaze me too much.
“I’m good how are you?”
She smiled and I could tell she just wanted to know was Cameron my child. This wouldn’t be the first time I had felt that vibe from someone, but it never bothered me so I just acted as if I didn’t notice it. “I’m good planning our wedding and taking care of Lexie.”
I smiled and looked at the little girl who was staring at Cameron. I didn’t ask for all of that information but I could tell Lauryn hadn’t changed one bit from high school. She always wanted to get a rise out of me, but too much time had passed for me to still be running behind some grown ass man. I had bills to pay and another mouth besides mine to feed.
“Well good for you two and congratulations.”
I finished putting our things in the truck and I was hoping they would have gotten the hint to leave but Lauryn was still standing there with a mute Avery. “So where’s your husband? I’d love to meet him since you have such a beautiful daughter.”
I had to give it to her she was good but I already knew that’s where she was headed so I told Cameron to go get into the truck and I closed the trunk. “I’m not married and that’s my niece.”
“Oh I’m sorry I just though-”
“Alright Lauryn let’s just go I’m sure Jordy is busy.”
I watched Avery as he pulled his keys out of his pocket and handed them to Lauryn, “Go start the car babe.” She rolled her eyes before holding her hand out to the little girl and they walked on to their car. I started walking to the driver’s side so I could go home but Avery stopped me.
“How you been?”
“I’ve been great.”
“I heard you didn’t go finish your last year of college.”
“Keeping tabs on me?”
He smiled and shook his head, “Nah I just know people.”
I got in the truck and rolled the window down, “Well this was nice and all but I have things to do.”
“Still the same Jordy avoiding situations.”
“I’m not avoiding anything but you should be. I don’t think your fiancée wants to wait on you while you catch up with an old classmate.”
