Jared wasn’t a big reader, it must be said, but this book was- different. He lay almost upside down on one of the big sofas in the family sitting room, legs hooked over the end with sock-clad feet dangling in mid-air and ‘The Catcher In the Rye’ held above him. It was past one am before anyone else got home, and even then it was only his brother Cosmo.

“OI OI OI!” whooped Cosmo, stumbling into the sitting room with a shout of laughter. Jared rolled his eyes, carefully tucking Isaac’s book underneath one of the silk sofa cushions. Cosmo began to walk towards him and then paused, a vaguely green expression taking over his face.

“Oh fuck, no way,” Jared said, and took hold of his brother to barrel him towards the bathroom. He didn’t quite make it to the loo, throwing up all over the tiled floor. “You’re cleaning that up,” muttered Jared, pushing Cosmo to the toilet. “Mum’s gonna flip.”

He sighed loudly and left to get Cosmo a glass of water.
