It was a warm summer afternoon, the birds merrily chirped and the sunshine glazed over the landscape.

A young woman, barely twenty, along with a man just as young as her are standing in front of a small building.

She has wrapped around her arms a little baby clad in soft fabric, soundly asleep.
She affectionately held the infant, for the very last time.

While, the man has a huge bag that consists of items that belonged to his child who was locked in his lover's embrace.

The sign clearly read-
Mary's Orphanage

'Do we really have to do this?'
She asks him, with a red nose and tears rolling down her pale cheeks.

'Do we have a choice?'
He answers, equally hurt.

With abundant pain and a heavy heart, the couple walk into the alien premises.

___

'Hello? How may i help you?'
The old lady, smiles.

She was the owner and caretaker of the orphanage.

As the couple entered,
Voices of children laughing and babies crying intimidated their conscience.

A few kids ran into the pair, puppy eyeing them, hoping for a family, wishing for the parents they never had.

It was beyond depressing.

With a low tone, the man spoke:
'We want to give you, our daughter. We are bound to and it has been the toughest decision. Guilt will eat us up, we know it. But as much as it hurts, there is no choice..'

The young mother gulps, staring at her twelve month old daughter who slowly begins to open her big shiny eyes.

'I am sorry..'
She sobs.
__

With some necessary paperwork, it was finally time for them to leave.

She held onto the girl tightly, kissing her soft pink skin.

A mother had to give away her daughter.
A father had to leave his child, to a stranger.

He hands the baggage to the wrinkled woman.

'I hope someone finds you. Takes you home and gives you everything we couldn't give you. I hope you will forgive us, someday. I love you.'

The young woman whispered to her oblivious child.

'We will come back, we will take you home. I hope, in the next few years we'd make it..'
The man thought to himself.

The little girl unaware, was staring blankly at her mother with awe.

'She falls asleep to lullabies and cries if you leave her alone..'
He tells the granny, almost choking on to his words that contradict his actions so severely.

One last kiss, and the baby was in the arms of someone else.

Then her helpless parents disappeared.

Only then, the little girl starts to cry.

And that little girl, is you.

____

Your parents met in college.
just nineteen when they started to date.
For them, it wasn't really love.
It was somewhat like a strong liking, more like having fun.

In the name of fooling around and exploring bits of longing lust,
one fine day.. your twenty year old mother realised she has you-in her.

It was a feeling of instant horror and happiness at the same time.

But it seemed that the reality of life only stressed on the horror.

It was close to impossible, for such a young and still immature couple to even think of raising a child together.
Especially a couple, not so seriously committed.

It was barely the second year of college.
On the other hand, you were kept a secret from both of your grandparents (maternal and paternal) as,there could have been scarily alarming consequences.

They weren't ready or even close to prepared to become 'parents'

Your mother denied abortion and insisted on to bring you to this world, instead of just letting you die.

Only to leave you behind.

But no matter what, they loved you.

But they had to give you up.

Their career, dreams and opportunities were the top priority.
It wasn't easy to get into such a reputed college and when their parents had to pay exorbitant prices.

As unfair as it sounds, the truth is always bitter.

The one year old girl was left in an orphanage, with a hope of her being adopted by someone she deserved.
Also with the hope of them coming back to her, someday.
Hope to take the responsibility, which was ethically theirs.
___

This is where you began your early years, this is where you met Chim, for the very first time.

You may have been devoid of parental love and guidance but you were happy in your tiny world with the fellow orphans.

Chimchim was your best friend.
Your everything.
You guys basically grew up together.
Out of everyone, he was your favourite.
Your special friend.
You loved him more than anybody.
Mostly because both of you, had only each other.

You did everything together.
From stealing flowers from your neighbor's garden to falling asleep next to each other.

The bond was diamond strong.

Many people came to the orphanage and wanted to adopt you.
But you refused to leave.
You'd only go if Chimchim came along as well.

Similarly, your friend wouldn't leave you too.
Both of you just wanted to be together, like this.
Forever.

Chim's parents had passed away in a car accident when he was only two.
The rescue team waited for his relatives to claim him but his family put him up into an orphanage instead.

Disowning him.

Almost like your parents, disowned you.

He was told that his parents expired and nobody really came to take him home.

You were told that your parents were in trouble and didn't want you to be hurt, so they left you.

That is all you knew.

You always thought,
'How could they leave me?'
'What was the trouble?'
'Was i the trouble?'

It hurt you so much.
You hated them.
You loathed their existence.

'Where are you now?'
'Are you happy without me?'
'Do you even remember me?'
'Dont you miss your child?'

All these questions ate you up.
Bruised your heart.

Maybe amidst this tragedy, Chimchim was the bandaid, the lost love.
Your company.

And so were you, to him.

Even as a nine year old, you lost all hopes to reunite with your parents.

You waited too long.
And now, you don't want them anymore.
You are healing, you are happy.
Happy with your present life.
