On Wattpad, fans remix work, write fanfiction, translate Wattpad stories into other languages, and make anything from story trailers to story covers for their favorite writers. That’s why over 300,000 Wattpad writers have already licensed their work under Creative Commons; a non-profit that enables the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools. This includes Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother, and Jordan’s (XxSkater2Girl16xX) A Proscriptive Relationship. There are many types of Creative Commons licenses, but every license helps other creators promote digital creativity, sharing, or innovation.

Today we are happy to announce that we’ve updated the licensing options on Wattpad to Creative Commons to 4.0. This means you now have more options when creating and more freedom to share and remix your work.

There are several Creative Commons licenses to suit your needs:

Attribution: others can use and distribute your work, but they must attribute the work to you

Share Alike: others can use your work, but whatever they use it for must be shared too

No Derivative: your work can be used, word for word, but you can’t remix or change it

Non Commercial: people can use your work, but can’t make money from it

If you are interested in Creative Commons (CC) Licenses, learn more at http://creativecommons.org/. If you would like to update the licensing on your Wattpad stories, you can find licensing under your story settings.

If you would like to check the license for a story you love, here's how:

1. Go to the story on the Wattpad website (not on the mobile app)

2. Go into a middle chapter of the story and hover your mouse over the cover

3. A little information box will come up and under the story title it will tell you what license the author chose. If they chose "All Rights Reserved" you can't remix the work. If they chose one of the Creative Commons licenses above (see each description), you may be able to remix the work, with some restrictions.

4. It is always a good idea to contact the writer to let them know you loved their story and that you would like to remix it.

Want to try your hand at remixing? Fill in the blanks in this Cory Doctorow sentence, from his story Little Brother, available on Wattpad. Post your remix in the comments or on Twitter @Wattpad.
